Dan Evans is one of the most respected executives in professional baseball, with decision-making roles across five Major League Baseball franchises over four decades. He currently serves as President of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), after joining its Board of Directors in 2021 and being elected President in 2025.
A former Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers (2001–2004), Evans rebuilt the organization from one of MLB’s lowest-ranked farm systems to Baseball America’s #1 scouting and player development pipeline within just two years. Under his leadership, the Dodgers’ winning percentage ranked as the second-best in franchise GM history, and his 2003 bullpen is still regarded by FanGraphs as one of the best since World War II.
Evans’ career includes influential roles with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and Toronto Blue Jays, where he most recently served as Major League Scout and Director of Pacific Rim Operations. He is also the President of Baseball Operations for Athelyix Inc., a Baseball-Reference Brand Ambassador, and the former COO of the iconic Field of Dreams Movie Site.
A pioneer in integrating technology and video analysis into baseball scouting and operations, Evans has overseen two of the most productive consecutive drafts in MLB history and mentored countless front office professionals.

Veteran MLB Scout | Los Angeles Dodgers
For nearly 40 years, Hank Jones was a trusted scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, covering the Pacific Northwest and helping the franchise capture two World Series titles (1981, 1988). Over the course of his long career, Jones thrived through four ownership groups, seven general managers, and five scouting directors — a rare accomplishment that speaks to his integrity, judgment, and reputation across Major League Baseball.
A slick-fielding middle infielder, Jones was drafted in the 15th round of the 1972 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants before joining the Dodgers in the 1976 Rule 5 Draft. While his playing career included three years in the Giants’ system, his lifelong impact came in scouting, where he dedicated the remainder of his career to Dodger Blue.
As an area scout, Jones was responsible for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii, and Western Canada. He became a fixture during the MLB Draft — often the only amateur scout invited into the draft room — due to the extraordinary value teams placed on his evaluations.

The things that I learned from this course are that networking is a lot bigger deal than I realized. I learned how to write scouting reports and get really good feedback on them as to what I need to work on and it's nice knowing that I can make mistakes and learn from them here instead of making them later. In January, we got the opportunity to play at the Latin American Baseball Series in Mexico where we finished third and during this series we got a call from the Commissioner of the Caribbean asking if Panama could host a Caribbean Series and get Toros to play in the tournament. Not only did we help them organize the series and were great hosts, but a team that I put together in four days with 15 Toros Players, and 6 Panamanians from other teams and seven players from the Nicaragua and Colombian league won the Series in what is one of the most incredible histories in modern Baseball. We competed against the best teams in the winter leagues and finished with a 4W - 1L record with historic victories against Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba.

I'm very proud to announce that I have formally accepted a Video Scout position with Baseball Info Solutions that I will be starting in March. Not going to lie, it's been a long year filled with a lot of doubt of whether I could even get a job baseball after a lot of rejection but I finally turned a dream that I had in high school into reality. Thank you to everyone who believed that I could make this happen even when I had my doubts. Also, a huge thank you to my mentors at Sports Management Worldwide Dan Evans and Ari Kaplan. I gained so much information from them and their guidance put me in position to make this happen. I'm excited to see where this takes me and I can't wait to get started!

I had no idea what to expect when I started this course. I thought that if I were to learn at least one thing about baseball it would be worth it. I ended up learning so much more than expected. That has everything to do with the great teachers SMWW was able to get to teach the courses. All of them are willing to help you in you start your career in baseball if you show the work ethic and passion for the game.
