Why You Should Take the Hockey Hall of Fame History of Hockey Course

True fans of Hockey will relish in the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the history and hidden stories surrounding the game.

Our 8-week online course will NOT be a compilation of recycled stories told countless times before, it will cover the heart and soul of the game through Phil Pritchard, VP of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Keeper of the Cup and Hockey historian.

Phil delves into vivid and affectionate portraits of the characters of the game, sharing first-person accounts and stories never before told. He’ll share the history of the game no one wants to talk about; the lies, corruption, and characters that have stained the respectful game. Life on the road, traveling 200+ days per year with the Stanley Cup quite literally beside him. And he’ll examine the growth of the game, the digital age and what the future holds.

This course will be unlike any other, tantalizing you with the unexpected each week, and ultimately satisfying your appetite for hockey knowledge beyond the common.

If you have a desire to work in the game of hockey, just think how powerful it will be to say you have been taught the history of the game by Phil Pritchard! Or maybe you are a fan who wants to deepen their knowledge or a journalist with a desire for historical perspective.

Whatever your reasoning, if you have a passion for hockey, this course is perfect for you.

Meet your Mentor

As vice-president of the Hockey Hall of Fame, one of Phil Pritchard's highest-profile responsibilities is as "Keeper of the Cup", the personal chauffeur and white-gloved protector to Lord Stanley's Trophy. Since 1994 Phil Pritchard has shared in the glory of championship moments, hand-delivering the trophy to the newly crowned champions. And since the trophy is given to each individual player for a day, Pritchard travels in the name of hockey more than 200 days a year!

Since joining the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988 Phil has been instrumental in the museum's growth, including its 1993 move to Toronto and, more recently, the 2009 opening of the new home of the museum’s vast archival collections.

In addition to his responsibilities with the Hockey Hall of Fame, Phil has served for many years on the Board of Directors for International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA) as well as the Canadian Association of Sport Heritage (C.A.S.H). Pritchard is a committee member for the Lester Patrick Award (which selects outstanding contributions to hockey in the United States) and sits on the International Ice Hockey Federations “Historical Committee”.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Sheridan College Hall of Fame and in 2009, he received the Schroeder Award from the International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA), the ISHA’s highest honor.
