The Playbook - When Opportunity Looks You Up: Showing Up Digitally

What happens after you meet someone at a conference, introduce yourself, and make a great first impression?
They look you up.
In today’s world, your digital presence is often the second handshake. It is what people see when they want to learn more about you. And most of the time, that means they go straight to LinkedIn.
Your Profile Is Part of Your Reputation
If your LinkedIn profile is outdated, incomplete, or inactive, you may be sending the wrong message without even realizing it. Think of it like showing up to an interview in the wrong uniform.
The good news is that it only takes a little effort to make your profile work for you.
Here are a few things to check:
- Profile photo: Choose a clear, professional image that represents how you want to be seen in your field.
- Headline: Go beyond your current title. Use a short phrase that captures who you are and what you are passionate about in sports.
- About section: Write in your voice. Share what drives you, what you are learning, and where you want to go.
- Activity: Engage with posts that interest you, especially from people and organizations in your target area. Comment thoughtfully. Share what you are learning.
Be Present, Not Perfect
You do not need to post every day or create elaborate content. But you should be visible. People are more likely to connect with you if they see you contributing to conversations about the industry.
When someone looks you up, your recent activity tells a story. It shows curiosity, consistency, and commitment.
Your Digital Presence Is a Living Portfolio
Think of LinkedIn as more than a resume. It is a record of how you think, what you value, and how you interact with the professional world. The effort you put into showing up online can turn a brief introduction into an ongoing connection.
So ask yourself: if someone from the sports industry looked me up today, would my profile reflect the professional I want them to see?
