Position |
 |
|
Patrick O'Herron took SMWW's Basketball GM &
Scouting course in 2005. Since then, he has continued to build
his basketball career. SMWW caught up with him in his new
position.
Coach O'Herron, could tell us about your position in the
Continental Basketball Association (CBA).
O'Herron: My current position is Head coach and
General Manager of the Butte Daredevils. As General Manager
and Head coach I am involved in scouting, contract
negotiations, marketing, player development and more.
What are your goals for your organization for this
season? What is your ultimate goal in basketball?
O'Herron: As we plan for our second season in Butte,
our goal as an organization is to build a solid foundation in
the community and to increase our fan base. Our players and
management will be involved in local school programs, charity
functions, basketball clinics, and more. As a professional
team, we want to provide quality basketball that the whole
family can enjoy.
My personal goal is to help my players reach their full
potential as basketball athletes so they may be positioned for
success and advancement. My ultimate goal is obtain a head
coaching position in the NBA.
What was your experience like in the Basketball GM &
Scouting course with SMWW?
O'Herron: I had a fabulous experience in this
course! The teachers, books and hand outs were fantastic. I
learned a lot from the group discussions and I thought your
choice of guest speakers were excellent. Even now, I refer
back to the books and material we covered in class because it
truly applies to my current position .
Would you recommend the course to others who want to
work in coaching or personnel in basketball? Why?
O'Herron: Yes, I would recommend this course to
others because I believe this program is designed very well
and offers valuable information and insight into these
basketball careers. This course gave me the knowledge I needed
and the tools to feel confident as a GM and head coach.
Networking is extremely important in this business and even
today I continue to benefit from the contacts that were made
through SMWW.
Anything else that you would like to say? Good luck this
season from everyone at SMWW!
O'Herron:Thank you to those who work so hard to make
this course a success. It is wonderful to have a program that

SMWW Student Lands Hockey Scouting
Position |
|
|
|
Dave Cadelli began SMWW's Hockey
GM & Scouting course in March 2007. He now spends his
weekends scouting games in the St. Louis & Chicago areas
for the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL
(United States Hockey League) which is a tier 1 Jr A league.
Every weekend Cadelli sees two to three games and a couple
times a year he attends tournaments that allow him to scout 20
to 30 games at a time. As you will see in our story below,
Cadelli's passion for the game is strong and he couldn't be
happier getting to spend a lot of time by the ice.
"I just love the game," said Cadelli. "I get to watch so
much hockey now and the more games I attend, the more hockey
people I get to meet so my relationships are just growing and
growing. I sit with scouts from a lot of different leagues and
we talk about the players on the ice and its fun to pick their
brains and also to give your own insights."
Every month each scout for the Musketeers is required to
turn in a list of their top 25 players that they have seen in
the minor leagues. Cadelli works with a team of eight scouts
for the Musketeers who are located all over Canada and the US.
Most of the guys scouting these leagues have aspirations to
move up the ranks in hockey and Cadelli is no different.
"When I first began here, I heard about a couple guys
who are now doing work for a couple NHL teams [Boston Bruins
and the Washington Capitals]," said Cadelli. "Since taking
SMWW's course and now taking this position, my reports have
just gotten better and better so I'm hoping that in the next
couple years, I could continue to advance my career and work
my way up."
Cadelli credits the course with SMWW as the breakthrough he
needed to get his position in the USHL.
"Taking the course and having the audio chats with the
guys from ISS helped me become more knowledgeable about the
game and the details of writing a scouting report," said
Cadelli. "But, having the course on my resume and getting a
letter of recommendation from ISS was something that really
helped separate me from other people who just had a passion
for the game. When I started talking with them about the
position, they asked about the course and I was able to tell
them about my use of RinkNet and how I had learned directly
from ISS, which is a respected organization in the world of
hockey."
Cadelli says that he would recommend the course to those
who are looking to get their career going in hockey.
"Absolutely, I would recommend the course," said
Cadelli. "I really enjoyed the live audio chats. To get to
talk directly to guys who are out there scouting all the time
really helped me. Using the RinkNet scouting software is
something that still helps me today because it is a very
powerful tool. It has a lot of great ways to describe certain
abilities of players built into it so I still use many of the
phases to identify and describe what a player is good at."
Cadelli says taking the position in the USHL was a great
decision for him and he recommends that others looking to get
their start should look for similar opportunities.
"SMWW's course is a great place to start. Once you
complete the course, you will have more confidence and will be
able to communicate better about the game. Then I would tell
anyone to take any position they can because the opportunities
to network are great when you have games to scout all the time
and you can come into contact with other scouts and hockey
people working for teams."
