The Motorsports Management Course will provide an introduction into methods and skills necessary to run a racing team in the highly competitive industry of racing. The Motorsports Management Course will also cover issues including the history of racing around the world, current developments in series and championships, endorsement basics, supplemental revenue for drivers, sponsorships, and basic concepts for spotters and team managers that wish to obtain the best results out of their race team and their drivers. Students will understand the day to day tasks performed by a race team and gain the understanding of overall management of both on track and off track personnel.

All graduates of the course will have a well-rounded understanding of the motorsports business industry, specifically in the areas of grass roots management, sports marketing, personnel, customer service, promotions and event management. The Motorsports Management Course will cover all the major issues that professional racing faces today; winning, social and ethical issues to the more traditional media, sponsorship and business matters.

Course Instructors

Instructors for the course are Tom Blattler, Jim Utter, and Juan Pablo Sanchez with Dr. Lynn Lashbrook. Collectively they have worked in professional racing worldwide over 50 years. The keys to landing a job in most venues are the same; it's "who you know and what you know." These instructors combined have both!

You will be learning not only how to break into the racing world but you will be learning from people who are currently very involved in Motor Sports Management at a variety of levels. They will share their insights and expertise of how to succeed in the competitive business world of racing and how to stay at the top when you get there. What would you do to gain the added insights of years of auto racing and sponsorship experience? What could you bring to a race car team with the new techniques.

Tom Blattler, Jim Utter, Juan Pablo Sanchez and Dr. Lynn Lashbrook:

Tom Blattler is a motor sports sponsorship, public relations and media relations guru with over 30 years of professional experience with major sports events. Blattler brings unmatched experience with a variety of race sponsors, racing leagues and media outlets. His personal clients have included Rahal Letterman Racing, Don Prudhomme Racing, Tom Gloy Racing, Duracell, Centrix Automotive, Pioneer, CARA Charities and the NHRA. He has introduced and coordinated media relations activities on a national and international level including: the Nissan Pathfinder SUV, Nissan “Hardbody” truck, Honda Racing Program, Miller Lite CART Indy Car, Motorola’s Indy Car, Icehouse NASCAR Truck Program and Shell and Argent Mortgage Racing. In the Motor Sports Management course Tom will share his hard earned knowledge of sponsorship, marketing relations, event planning, public relations and promotions specific to the business of auto racing.

Blattler started his own communication company TB Communications in 1986 and has gone on to assist companies at major automotive events such as the Indy 500, U.S. Formula One Grand Prix and Daytona 500. Blattler and TB Communications have worked with personalities like Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, Danica Patrick, Buddy Rice, Kenny Brack and John Andretti just to name a few. Blattler has won numerous media relations awarded including Best National Sports Charity Media Program (Rahal's Last Ride, 1998), Jim Chapman Award (Top media relations award on the CART Indy Car Series, 1992), Best Automotive Long Lead Program (Nissan Truck Introduction, 1986) and the National Media Award for production of a Special Section (Indy 500, 1990) in USA Today.

Jim Utter has covered NASCAR for the past eight years with The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com. Jim is currently vice president of the National Motorsports Press Association and has won awards for news-breaking stories of NASCAR events by the N.C. Press Association and NMPA. He is an occasional guest on Performance Racing Network's "Pit Reporters" radio talk show. Jim has years of experience at the race track and knows job openings before they go public. He worked his way up in auto racing and will share his secrets to getting into the motor sports business from the bottom up.

Juan Pablo Sanchez has been participating, working and teaching in Auto Racing Management for the past 10 years demonstrating a lifelong passion for racing. Juan Pablo has raced cars and motorcycles, acted as advisor and spotter for professional racecar drivers. Juan, a sports law attorney for 9 years, is the CEO of a sports agency in Mexico, will share his experience representing race car drivers and skills to promote and assist race car drivers around the world. Internationally, Juan has participated in seminars and practical courses with several NASCAR teams. As part of racecar teams in Mexico, Juan Pablo has acted as spotter for several professional drivers winning 3 championships in the Vintage series. He has assisted teams in the development of new strategies and guided drivers on and off the racetrack. At the end of the Motor Sports Management courses, Juan invites students to join him in the pit for hands on experience.

Lynn Lashbrook Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook has been working and teaching in Sports Management for over 30 years and has demonstrated a lifelong passion for helping students strategize and reach their career goals in the world of sports. Dr. Lashbrook has served at the collegiate level as an athletic academic advisor and athletic director. At the professional level he has been an NFL sports agent for the past ten years and created the first ever online sports management company with a mission to train individuals for specific sports careers.

The Motorsports Management Course is an 8 week online course designed to provide skills aspiring motorsports business executives seek. Professional drivers will often join the chats to offer their input and expertise. Course participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and relive the experience of drivers whom have been there for the checkered flag, put against the wall, or experienced frustration due to mechanical failures. Internship, Practicum, Apprenticeship, and "Hands On" Experience:

Each SMWW Motorsports Management graduate will participate in a short term job experience. This will vary for each student based on their career goals and location. The internship program is designed to prepare you for work in a variety of settings including at the racetrack, for a team, in media and public relations, or ticket and sponsorship. Job experiences could include shadowing NASCAR personnel, or working with your local speedway, or assisting a national organization with press releases or media events. The opportunities are endless. The instructors for the course will work with you one on one to determine which "job experience" would be most beneficial for your individual situation. This will be geared to the motorsports industry you are most interested. This unique opportunity gives each student the necessary hands on experience and will enhance their motorsports career skills portfolio with the guidance of the SMWW instructors.
