| SBM Student Now Working For the Milwaukee Brewers |
 |
|
SMWW’s
Sports Business Management (SBM) course
offers students a unique opportunity to learn how to
secure a
number of positions in the front office of a sports
team. If you have
interest in working in media or community relations,
sponsorship or ticket sales, marketing, customer
service, communications or operations, then SBM can
get you on your way to working every day in a
sports career.
This month we bring you the story of Josh Stoller.
Josh contacted us with a tremendous passion
for sports and the willingness to do whatever it would
take to get his first sports job. He now spends his
days at the ballpark, talking baseball and loving every
minute of it.
SMWW: Josh, could you tell us about your
position with the Milwaukee Brewers?
Josh: My job title here at the Brewers is a
TSR (ticket sales representative). I sell season ticket
packages such as 4, 9 and
20 packs, in addition to full season tickets. Last
month,
I also began setting up group outings. Currently I am
second in revenue and first in call numbers. Your first
season is a little more challenging and it gets easier
as you build up your customer base.
It is finally an enjoyable experience coming to work
every morning, which is something that few people
can say about the jobs they hold. I am the only
employee working for the Brewers that has yet to earn
a college degree, so without SMWW I never would
have gotten the opportunity that I now have.
We have lots of different sales contests that we
hold to keep things exciting. We even went out bowling
as a sales group while we were on the clock to boost
team morale. It is truly an incredible feeling to work for
a pro sports team.
SMWW: You have a great story because of where
you are now. Tell everyone what you were doing
before going to work at the Brewers?
Josh: Before working for the Brewers, I was
actually working at a gas station. I loved my boss & the
people I worked with and had health insurance but
there wasn’t a future there and it wasn’t what I really
wanted to do with my life. To now be working with the
Brewers is an unbelievable thing for me. I fee very
lucky to have this opportunity.
SMWW: How did SMWW and the SBM course
help you secure this new position?
Josh: The SBM course prepared me
immensely for the job that I now have. I learned how to
be a truly great salesperson, first and foremost. I was
taught how to leave effective voicemails and how to
make quality cold calls. That is a skill that has proven
to be invaluable for me with the Brewers.
SMWW: Anything else that you would like to
say?
Josh: Without SMWW I wouldn’t be in the
position I am today. Bret Polvorosa [one of the
instructors for the SBM Course] was the person who
set up my interview with the Brewers and he made
sure to put in a good word for me. He also gave me
tips and pointers on how to present myself in the
event and even what to wear for the interview. I
really want to thank everybody at SMWW for giving me
the opportunity that I was able to take advantage of,
thanks to all of the knowledge I gained through your
teachings.

| SMWW Student Breaks New Ground |
 |
|
Former Athlete Management Course
student and current Agent
Advisor,
Alexis Levi recently became
the first African American female owner in
professional basketball when she purchased
an expansion professional basketball franchise in
International
Basketball League (IBL). The team,
based in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be coached by
George Tarkanian, son of former UNLV head
basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian.
"SMWW gave me a good base of knowledge about
the
sports business and allowed me to become a Sports
Agent Advisor which lead to me furthering my
knowledge of the business of basketball," said Levi-
Scott. "What I learned in the course and while working
with SMWW gave me the courage to own the Las
Vegas Stars Professional Mean's Basketball Team.
The
in-depth workshops and reading materials provided
during the Sports Management course gave me the
details and information required when working with a
professional athlete. "
Levi-Scott quickly went to work on holding tryouts,
generating publicity for the team and signing players
to
contracts.
"The Las Vegas Stars are comprised of athletes
from
Las Vegas, NY, Atlanta, Detroit and Arizona, California
and Finland," said Levi-Scott. "We are excited
about the national publicity that we have received.
Since taking ownership, we have received calls of
interest from the NBA, NBDL, CBA and some
international teams. It is very exciting."
The Stars' home opener is Thursday, April 19 versus
the Colorado Crossover. The team will play its home
games at Stations Sports Complex; the team has
arranged to increase seating capacity on game days,
and will offer fans valet parking. Levi's team will host
12 home games at the Las Vegas Station Sports
Complex before approximately 2,500 fans. NBC
affiliate KVBC will televise some home games. Fans
may also view games on Internet Sports Channel
Pay2ViewTV.com
The International Basketball League is a third-year
professional men's basketball league. Consisting of
25 teams across the U.S., the IBL follows NBA rules
with a few exceptions: 1.) five fouls per player, 2.) 22-
second shot clock, 3.) an immediate inbounds, and
4.) Only one timeout per quarter. These rules were
designed to reduce down time and lead to a faster &
more entertaining game.

| SMWW to have a booth at the Final Four |
 |
|
Sports Management Worldwide will be in attendance
at the 2007 Final Four in Atlanta. The National Association of
Basketball Coaches (NABC) has a
large EXPO at the Final Four every year and this year,
SMWW will be represented with a booth.
At the booth will also be a member of Synergy Sports
Technology's staff. SMWW was extremely fortunate
to
form a relationship with Synergy and to be able to
provide access of their service to students in the
Basketball GM &
Scouting Course. Synergy is the
leading online video analysis company for the NBA.
NBA teams who subscribe to their service have the
ability to pull up "on demand" video of any player in D-
1 basketball or the NBA and watch video that is broken
up by the type of play (such as transition, pick & roll or
coming off a screen).
If you are planning to be at the Final Four, SMWW
wants to invite you to meet some of our staff as well
as a representative of Synergy Sports Technology.
