SMWW
Welcomes New Sports Revenue Management
Facilitator!
Mentoring is such a big part of
every course SMWW provides. We find sports professionals who
have walked paths to success and we have them show our
students how they can do the same! We're happy to announce
we've found the perfect sports marketing veteran to join Tom
Leip in teaching our Sports
Revenue Management Course: Bret Polvorosa, founder and
President of Grip Inc.
Polvorosa is a sports sales and marketing specialist
who consults with professional teams, collegiate properties
and organizations outside of sports. How did he get his
start?
"My first sports job was selling tickets and providing
customer service, part-time, for a minor league baseball
team in Portland, Oregon. It wasn't full-time but it gave me
the experience necessary to land a full time job within six
months," said Polvorosa.
Polvorosa's story only reinforces the message sent from
SMWW and current Sports Revenue Management (SRM) facilitator
Tom Leip: ticket sales and customer service, though not the
most glamorous positions within a front office, are probably
the most effective ways for people with minimal experience
and not a lot of contacts to get their foot in the door and
start working their way up the professional sports ladder.
After a decade working in baseball, golf, hockey,
basketball and sports marketing, Polvorosa went out on his
own and founded Grip. Based in Portland, Oregon, Grip is a
leading professional development organization that provides
workshops and seminars for North American business
development units in the sports and corporate sectors.
Polvorosa knows first hand the challenges teams face
in trying to find good people and also the challenges job
seekers face in trying to start their sports careers.

Tap into the
SMWW Network!
Everyone accepted into the Sports
Revenue Management (SRM) program brings a certain amount
of "what you know." The "what you know" might be a mix of
your work experience and educational background ... no
matter the level of either. By completing the SRM
Course we will enhance your "what you know" and make it
industry specific. Our instructors and their professional
experience ensure that.
In addition, perhaps the most
important part of landing a job in any desirable industry or
company is the "who you know." Sports teams, Nike, adidas,
PGA Tour, ESPN ... how many unsolicited resumes do you think
the HR Departments within those organizations receive on a
daily basis? We know a person who sees the number of resumes
the NFL league office in New York receives on a daily basis.
You don't want to know the number.
By going through the SRM
Course and becoming a member of the SMWW family, we will
tap you into our network ... our "who you know." Remember,
it's a crap shoot out there for the teams we assist or call
on your behalf. If they can increase their chances of hiring
a person or group of people that will be able to produce at
a high level six months down the road ... they want to learn
more.
Our SRM
graduates become desirable. Your resume will be on the top
of the pile rather than in the, "We'll keep you in mind for
future positions ... thanks for applying ... buh- bye"
file.
Will you get job offers or will
you get a job after completing the program? That's our goal
for all SRM
graduates but guaranteeing employment is not our business.

Basketball
General Manager Course
Learning The Business Side Of Hoops
Has Never Been Easier!
SMWW believes the best way to
train individuals for careers in sports are through
exceptional mentoring and insight by those who have been
there and done it. Our new eight week online Basketball
General Manager and Scouting Course does just that.
Under the guidance of instructors
Dr. Lynn Lashbrook and Cleveland Cavaliers Director of
Player Personnel Mark Warkentein, students will be able to
take this course from anywhere in the world via
computer!
Whether you're striving to become
a GM, scout or director of player management, a deep
understanding of team operations, methods of talent
evaluation and overall insight into the business side of
basketball is essential. Lashbrook and Warkentein relay to
students their own successes and offer cutting edge theories
on how to develop a career working in pro Hoops.
"We're really excited to have
Mark help facilitate this course," said Lashbrook, SMWW
president. "His experience speaks for itself. He'll be able
to take students behind the scenes and show them what it
takes to make it as a talent evaluator in the
NBA."

Athlete
Management 400 Course
A Prelude To Becoming A Successful
Sports Agent!
Maybe you're a collegiate athlete
who has long wanted to be an agent. Or maybe you're like
Tony Ciccolella, who was in the middle of a career as a
recruiter and human resources specialist, when he decided
his career needed a different direction and enrolled in
SMWW's eight week online Athlete
Management 400 Course.
"I was making a nice living in
human resources, but I just wasn't jazzed about my job,"
says Ciccolella, now a SMWW Agent Advisor. "I've always
loved sports but it had never occurred to me before that I
could be a sports agent because I thought all agents were
lawyers. But some friends of mine noted that because of my
HR background I was used to negotiating, and because of my
recruiting background, I had an eye for talent. I had the
tools, but I needed a place to start."
Ciccolella enrolled in Athlete
Management 400 and learned the essentials as well as
insight not often found in a traditional classroom setting
or text book.

FINAL FOUR FOR
FOOTBALL:
SMWW President President Lynn
Lashbrook comments on the BCS as the NCAA Men's Final Four
gets underway:
"As we watch the huge success of
the NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament I can't help but
wonder how successful a college football playoff will be
someday. How exciting would it be for the top four
college football teams to meet and go head to head for a
shot at the college football crown. If you haven't done so
already, sign up for our bcsbusters.com
campaign and help us lead the charge for change through
a grass roots campaign. Authors Ben Johnson, Mark
Hales and I are going to attack this flawed system head
on and bring college football fans what they deserve, a
true National Champion. Our new book titled 'The BCS: A
Great American Controversy' is intented to do this
that."
