SBM Continues to Help Graduates Secure Jobs in Sports!

Each month we like to spotlight individuals who have taken our courses, utilized our contacts, and successfully landed sports careers. We recently caught up with SMWW alum Josh Bannister, who took our Sports Business Management Course (SBM) several months ago, and is now working as an account executive for the Augusta Lynx the ECHL.

Prior to finding SMWW, Josh had worked in sales and was employed at the Carolina Ice Palace, a South Carolina based recreational skating and hockey entertainment complex. He knew he wanted to work in sports, and credits SMWW President Dr. Lynn Lashbrook with helping him figure out exactly what part of the business he really belonged in.

"I found SMWW on the internet and gave Dr. Lashbrook a call,” says Bannister, now in his third month with the Lynx. “I thought I wanted to be a sports agent, but after talking at length with Dr. Lashbrook, we both realized that working in a front office environment is what I really wanted to do and where I belonged.”

Bannister says the weekly audio chats were “extremely valuable" because of the expertise of with Sports Business Management instructors Bret Polvorosa and Tom Leip. “The audio chats were amazing. Bret and Tom were able to teach and explain the material better than any book could. I would recommend to every student taking or thinking of taking a SMWW course to take advantage of the audio chats. So much is learned there,” said Bannister.

Josh isn’t the first career seeker SMWW has helped. He certainly won’t be the last. If there is a sports career you’ve been yearning for, we’ve got the experts to help you realize your dreams.

SMWW Partners with ISS!

Sports Management Worldwide is proud to announce a new partnership with Canadian based company International Scouting Services (ISS). ISS provides professional hockey clubs with high quality scouting information through the dynamic integration of hockey experts, scouting procedures and state-of-the-art technology.

Students who enroll in Sports Management Worldwide's Hockey GM & Scouting Course, will now be introduced to the concepts and new technology being used at the highest level of hockey scouting all over the world. As ISS is looking to grow its number of hockey scouts worldwide, some Hockey GM & Scouting Course graduates will be given the opportunity to work as scouts for ISS!

The Future of Scouting

Several NHL, CHL, NCAA teams and others are using new software and hardware devices to enhance their scouting process. Scouts can chart shots, assess players on quickness and effort, and record comments without missing a key play. Immediately after the game, the scout's report, including hockey players assessment, are sent via Internet, rather than the traditional method of writing everything down on paper.

This allows hockey organizations to gather and access information on players 24 hours a day from anywhere. By eliminating the mounds of paperwork associated with the scouting process, scouting has become more efficent and data is collected and shared much easier. SMWW course students will get the opportunity to be exposed to the cutting edge techniques being used by scouts with ISS and NHL teams worldwide.

Players Should Play, Security Should Secure – Any Questions?

Just one year after the big brawl in the stands between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans, New York Knick Antonio Davis recently headed to the bleachers to confront a Chicago Bulls fan he felt was threatening his wife. No punches were thrown and Davis was slapped on the wrist by the league for his actions. The point remains, however, that players must never try and play the role of security.

SMWW President Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, a fan behavioral expert and co-author of “Fan Etiquette,” notes in his daily blog that when a player “goes into the stands the potential for igniting a riot are significant. In my book on Fan Etiquette I state in the preface that Fan Etiquette must start with Player Etiquette, which means ask security to respond for the sake of Security!”

49ers Seeking Administrative Vet For Front Office

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and team owner John York are looking at possibly hiring an “administrator with NFL experience,” reports Santa Clara Press Democrat’s Maiocco. However, “the issue is not settled.” A 49ers spokesperson said Nolan and York are “exploring different options and having discussions with selected people in the NFL, but no conclusions have been reached.”

Nolan and York recently interviewed Atlanta Falcons executive vice president and chief administrative officer Ray Anderson, who was a sports agent until 2002 when he was hired by the Falcons to be a contract negotiator and salary-cap administrator.

The 49ers also have plans to meet with Seattle Seahawks vice president/football administrator Mike Reinfeldt after the Super Bowl (1/24).

SMWW would like to wish everyone a Happy Super Bowl, and hopefully we’ll be seeing you in Indy later this month!!!
