The reports created have been sold to the top hockey clubs and agents all over the world, including every team in the NHL.

ISS has developed its own unique method of evaluating players' strengths and weaknesses and demonstrate their knowledge of the game as well as improve their ability to evaluate players. Player evaluation reports involve some of the following.

  • Skating Mobility - Quickness, Foot speed, Agility (Lateral), Strength & Balance, ...
  • Hockey Sense - Makes good play, takes good hockey decision, relaxed, good-excellent on face-off, ...
  • Puck Control - Receiving a Pass, Making a Pass, Stick handling, Controls the Play - Makes Def. Make1st. Move, ...
  • Play Away Offensively - Position, Run Interference, Spectator, ...
  • From Puck Defensively - Anticipation, Positional Sound, Transition Game, ...
  • Shooting - # of Shots (Backhand, Wrist, Slap), Eye Hand (Make Something out of Nothing), No. of Goals (Accuracy), ...
  • Physical Game - Proportion (Upper & Lower Body), Stamina & Cardio (Over Game), Body Checking (Gains Puck), Quiet Checking (Knocks Player off Puck), In Corner/Front of Net (Position - Upper Body), Taking a Hit, Fighting, ...

ISS and SMWW will introduce you to the concepts and new technology being used at the highest level of hockey scouting all over the world. As ISS is looking to grow its number of hockey scouts worldwide, some Hockey GM & Scouting Course graduates will be given the opportunity to work as scouts for ISS!

Matt Ebbs Matt Ebbs became General Manager of ISS in 2006 after a 14 year career in law and business. As GM, Ebbs is in charge of all aspects of the ISS operation. Under his direction, ISS secured a contract with the QMJHL to provide the Import Draft Guide to all teams in the League. ISS partnered with RinkNet Scouting Software Company to offer teams in the NHL to AHL a variety to scouting products and services. Through partnerships with HockeyIQ.com, Next Testing and Hockey-Conditioning.com, ISS launched a leading edge player development program aimed at helping players from elite to house league achieve the next level. ISS has also partnered with The Fourth Period ("TFP") to offer a comprehensive NHL Draft Guide.

A native of Ottawa, Ebbs has coached at many levels and managed player development programs. Ebbs also played hockey at the University of Ottawa, Queen’s and also played three seasons at St. - Mike's College, University of Toronto. Ebbs obtained his law degree from the University of Ottawa and was admitted to the Ontario bar in 1993. Ebbs also obtained his M.B.A. from Queen's University in 2004.

Dino Caputo Michael Oke serves as the Chief Scout for ISS out of the Toronto area. Oke brings to the table a wealth of hockey experience as a player, scout, coach, and General Manager. For the past two seasons Oke has worked as the Director of Player Development and Assistant Coach with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. His key responsibilities included analyzing and evaluating individual performances of players on his own roster, as well as, evaluating the skills and tendencies of players on opposing teams. Previously Oke spent four years as Assistant Coach at Wilfred Laurier University of the Ontario University Athletic Association and four years as Full-Time Head Coach/General Manager with the Trenton Sting of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League. You will enjoy getting to know Michael and his insightful approach to hockey scouting.

Dino Caputo Dino Caputo serves as the Head Scout for the Western Branch of ISS's scouting department that is in charge of the Western Hockey League. He is responsible for coordinating the scouting activities of seven of ISS’s scouts and overseeing of Western Hockey League reports. Caputo is a current assistant coach and a former college hockey player for the University of Lethbridge, where he was nominated nationally for the Dr. Randy Gregg Award for leadership, academics and community service. In his 5-year junior hockey career, he played for WHL Victoria Cougars, BCHL Prince George Spruce Kings and captained the Trail Smoke Eaters. Dino provides students with high quality scouting information in a no-nonsense way that will enhance your knowledge of the game.

E.J. HradekE.J. Hradek is a senior writer at ESPN and former NHL Hockey Scout for the Dallas Stars. EJ, joined the ESPN staff in 1998. He began covering hockey as a writer/editor for Hockey Illustrated in 1989. The following year, he beat the Stars to Dallas (by three years), taking over as the editor of Beckett Hockey Monthly. When the Stars finally did arrive in Big D, he hosted a weekly hockey radio show and tried (unsuccessfully) to convert ESPN's Skip Bayless to the greatest game on ice.

In 1996, Hradek left Dallas, but not the Stars. Relocating back to the New York area, he became a part-time pro scout for the club, seeing over 100 NHL/AHL games for each of the next two seasons. The scouting gig was a great learning experience, offering a different view of the game.

Hradek grew up in Tuckahoe, N.Y., about 40-minute train ride from New York City. Despite the proximity to the Rangers, Hradek embraced the Islanders when the expansion franchise debuted in 1972. Eight years later, he was part of the sellout crowd at the Nassau Coliseum that witnessed the Islanders' first Stanley Cup championship.

A life-long rink rat (he has the scars to prove it), Hradek captained the club hockey team at Pace University during the early 1980s. In his four years, he played every position on the ice. In fact, as a goalie, he recorded the team's first shutout, turning aside 35 shots en route to a 5-0 win over Rutgers. For the skeptics, Hradek says he can produce a copy of that score sheet! A Journalism major at Pace, Hradek later coached the school's club hockey team, leading them to the playoffs during the 1988-89 season.

The Future of Scouting- Learn the latest technology

Several NHL, CHL, and NCAA teams and others are using new software and hardware devices to enhance their scouting process. Scouts can chart shots, assess players on quickness and effort, and record comments without missing a key play. Immediately after the game, the scout's report, including player assessments, are sent via Internet, rather than the traditional method of writing everything down on paper.

This allows hockey organizations to gather information on players 24 hours a day. By eliminating the mounds of paperwork associated with the scouting process, scouting has become more efficient, and data is collected and shared much more easily. SMWW course students will get the opportunity to be exposed to the cutting-edge techniques being used by teams worldwide.

RinkNet SMWW has forged a partnership with RinkNet Scouting software company to provide its Hockey GM & Scouting students training with the top level of scouting software on the market. RinkNet's scouting software and database system is currently being used by the majority of National Hockey League teams and many Canadian Hockey League teams. It also services teams in Finland, Sweden and Germany. Students in SMWW's course will be required to learn the ins and outs of the software as a part of the course training.

"It's exciting to think that our graduates will be coming out of the course with the ability to use a system that is being used in the NHL every day," says Dr. Lashbrook, President of SMWW. "We think this partnership and training is going to make our graduates more valuable to clubs and allow them to walk right in with solid training that can help the club immediately."

In addition to teaching students how to evaluate talent and actually write a scouting report, students will now learn the next step: recording the information and managing the data. Many people in the world of hockey scouting are able to judge talent, but there is nowhere else in the world that someone wanting to learn to scout can actually be taught the scouting management system being used by the NHL.
