SBM Student Accepts Job with Los Angeles Dodgers

SMWW's Sports Business Management program

"I had minimal traction in my sports career search until I signed up for SMWW's Sports Business Management program. I started four weeks ago and TODAY was offered and accepted a full-time position with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Yesterday I spent fifteen minutes of one-on-one interview coaching with SMWW and went into today's interview confident and more than prepared. Also, SMWW crafted a great letter of recommendation for me which I presented to the Dodgers along with my SBM sports-specific resume. Through SMWW's contacts with the Dodgers my resume and application went from the rejection pile to getting an interview, being presented a full time offer and eventually accepting the position." - Joey Seymour, Los Angeles Dodgers

Jake Squyers from Waco, Texas is one of our most recent Sports Business Management Program graduates. Jake came to SMWW with a goal to get a summer internship with the NBA. We helped Jake by giving him the sports specific skill set teams are looking for in their candidates, and assisted him in getting an internship with the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers.

"Sports Management Worldwide provides all of those interested in getting into sports a specialized skill that if taken full advantage of can help open those 'tough to enter' doors within the sports industry. The facilitators are well trained, understanding and passionate about helping their students. The education and training I received from the program helped me get a position in the sports industry."

- Jake Squyres, Atlanta Hawks & Thrashers (Atlanta Spirit, LLC)

License to Deal - New Baseball Agent Book - by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick

Sports Management Worldwide is featured in a new book, License to Deal by ESPN.com Insider Jerry Crasnick. Crasnick follows agent Matt Sosnick as he deals with the many needs of his up-and-coming clients and fends off rival agents intent on poaching players, all while trying to keep his love of baseball and his integrity intact. This is no easy task in a largely unregulated business that values dollar signs over loyalty and is ruled by a few mega-agents who will do just about anything to keep their position in the industry. It's a great book, and SMWW is now including it with our Agent program!

SMWW President Dr. Lynn Lashbrook was quoted in the press release for the book stating:

"This book is a must-read for anybody who wants to become a baseball agent. It's required, and included reading for any of our sports agent courses."

Heisman Candidate DeAngelo Williams

Matt Brock, Dr. Lashbrook, and Agent Advisor Lee Jones will be meeting with NFL prospect DeAngelo Williams in the future. Memphis has employed NASCAR to promote their Heisman candidate. The University of Memphis is revving up a $38,000 promotional effort for DeAngelo Williams that uses toy cars to link a Heisman Trophy campaign for the senior tailback to the popularity of NASCAR.

NHL Clubs Need to Quickly Rebuild Staffs

The NHL is back and they need quality trained staff. SMWW is already receiving calls for front office positions, full time & part time, mostly in ticket and corporate sales, as well as marketing departments. Get signed up for our Sports Business Management program today to help YOU secure a job in the NHL.

Blue-Chip Prospect, Haloti Ngata

Dr. Lashbrook and our NFL Consultant Matt Brock, along with Agent Advisors Harvey Lutu and Ron Manu, recently traveled to Utah to talk with a future top 10 NFL pick, Haloti Ngata. Etuini Haloti Moala Ngata is a massive man with a rare combination of power and agility. Ngata also has the athletic ability to chase down quarterbacks and make plays. He sheds blockers and can collapse the pocket which makes him the prototypical lineman for a 3-4 defense. It is only a matter of time before he is making an immediate impact for an NFL team.

Recent Signings

SMWW Agent Advisors Bob Newman and Frank Chechitelli have recently signed several basketball players! They have signed the Craven twins, Errick and Derrick from USC. Errick is currently with the Dallas Mavericks summer pro league in Long Beach, CA. Newman also has Jason Miller, a 6'10" Center from Oklahoma State University with a pending deal overseas as well as a 1st team All- American from Cal Poly, 6'7" guard Jeff Bonds. We are proud of the work Bob and Frank are doing for themselves and are confident they will continue to have success in the future!

The Rosenhaus Effect: Quantity Over Quality

Imagine an NFL where 83 percent of the league is represented by just one super agent, and holdouts are the norm, not the exception. According to Sports Illustrated's Andrew Perloff, by 2008 this could precisely be the scenario should Mega-Shark Drew Rosenhaus keep stealing clients at his current rate.

Scary, isn?t it? But in this client-crazed culture we work in, the "more is better" adage rules the day among establishment types. An agent's career isn't necessarily judged by the quality of his services, but by the quantity of clients he represents. The SMWW approach is healthier because we put our clients first, not our careers as agents. In fact, most SMWW Agent Advisors have other careers and choose to represent only a handful of athletes on the side, giving them complete and total attention. It is nearly impossible for a corporate agent to meet the needs of today's athletes.

Rosenhaus is a prime example of an agent who has bitten off more than he can chew. His NFL Rolodex now exceeds 90 clients, far more than he and his three-man staff can adequately represent. His ego is fed with each headline he garners and client he signs, and he has successfully channeled the negative publicity he's received from the media, NFL executives and other agents, claiming that he's disliked simply because of his success at signing more players than anybody else. But there's really more to it than that.

There are rumblings among other agents that Rosenhaus uses the players he's signed to recruit other players, a violation of NFL Players Association (NFLPA) rules. Rosenhaus denies the charges, but the fact that high-profile players keep dropping in his lap is not merely happenstance. This man uses the press like no other agent in the game. Rosenhaus figures that every time he publicly puts the screws to team execs, forcing a showdown, another agent's client will wander his way, hoping he can do the same for him too; and the cycle is repeated. This practice has worked to some degree, but his act is wearing thin with just about every team in the league.

The holdout has become a trademark for the talent Rosenhaus represents, when not but a few years ago, Rosenhaus championed himself on getting his players under contract without holding out.

Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse was a hold out; Philly's Terrell Owens is still holding out because he now finds the seven-year $49 million contract he signed last year to be insulting; Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver Chad Johnson, though not a hold-out yet, recently attained the services of Rosenhaus, much to the worriment and dismay of team management; and Super Drew's tactics nearly cost free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress a contract with the New York Giants.
Is the "team" concept lost on Rosenhaus? Does he not get that he has an obligation to help his clients keep their obligations to their teams and organizations? How will T.O. or the Eagles be better off if the star receiver ends up sitting out all next season?

Rosenhaus is in it for himself, plain and simple. But SMWW believes the future is bright as we continue to grow our global network of Agent Advisors and change the way in which things are done. It's only a matter of time. As SMWW President Dr. Lynn Lashbrook often notes, the current agent model is destined for failure because the more clients an agent has, the less likely it is that he is able to hold on to the relationship with his athletes. If you want to join forces in our online revolution, and change the business of sports agents, check out out Athelte Management program, in which you can join us as a Sports Agent Advisor and represent athletes in just over 8 weeks!
