Martin Bayfield is a former rugby union footballer
who played lock forward for Northampton Saints, Bedford
Blues and England, gaining 31 England and 3 Lions caps.
The 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) tall policeman made his England
debut in 1991, and although he was omitted from the 1991
World Cup squad, was a part of the 1992 Five Nations
Grand Slam winning side. He went on the 1993 British
Lions tour to New Zealand and was part of the 1999 World
Cup squad. He would play 18 times partnering Martin
Johnson. His final appearance for England came in the
1996 Five Nations match against Wales.
In 1995 Martin was voted Rugby Football Union, (RFU) Player
of the Year. His last game was against Gloucester in February
1998, a neck injury sustained in training a few days later
forced him to retire. Since retirement, Bayfield has worked
as a journalist and after dinner and motivational speaker.
Martin also acts and has made numerous TV and film appearances,
most notably in the Harry Potter films where he is the stunt
double for Hagrid the Giant. Martin is known for his comical
style and will share his insight to rugby. Read more about Martin.
Damian Hopley is the Chief Executive of The Professional Rugby Players Association. After playing first class rugby for over eight years, during which time he won 3 England Caps, a World Cup 7's Winners medal, a Cambridge Blue and various honours with Wasps, Damian was forced to retire from professional rugby in 1998, after a series of knee operations. The lack of support available to professional players led Damian to found the PRA later that same year.
He has been the driving force behind the PRA, having founded the organization after his retirement. He has been instrumental as the lead negotiator on all player related agreements for both the Engalnd team and the British and Irish Lions over the past four years, and is a board director on England Rugby Limited, the company established to run professional rugby in England. His influence ensures that the players' rights are protected and represented at all levels within the sport. Damian has a Masters degree in Theology from St Andrews University, and went on to postgraduate studies at Cambridge in 1992. Off the field, he also has a high profile in the media having written regular columns for the Daily Telegraph and The Evening Standard.

Abe Kerr
Having spent 10 years working in the professional rugby sector in a number of varied roles Abe Kerr established specialist union and league management and marketing consultancy Tri line sports (Tls) in March 2004. Post graduation (from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1994) he commenced work with the Rugby Football League in September 1995 and remained until November 1996 as, initially a marketing assistant on the Centenary World Cup (95) and then as tournament organiser and director of the Halifax Student World Cup (96). Thereafter he undertook commercial, community development, development and marketing roles for professional rugby clubs such as Oldham Bears,Sale, London Broncos, Bedford Blues and Hemel Hempstead. In June 2001 he joined a leading cricket management agency to develop and manage a stable of rugby players in both codes. His marketing background and personal skills, coupled with a semi pro rugby playing career enabled Abe to recruit and manage over 70 leading players. The duties undertaken included club negotiations and commercial work ie image rights, vehicle, supplement, clothing and book deals for international and club level rugby players and other sportspeople in boxing, cricket, cycling and even skate boarding !
Over the years of tls's development player management has remained focal. Additional, truly innovative elements have been developed such as rugby consulting services to leading international brands including Puma, Ultimate Sports Nutrition and the launch of multi sport "MySport" website, geared towards enabling leading sports clubs to raise revenues. Rugby union and league are both professional and some players and coaches do switch seamlessly between the two but they are very different in terms of on field rules, club and international structures, regionality, media coverage, salary cap restrictions, transfer movements and in many other areas.Although union and league are distinctly different entities both codes provide job opportunities in : development, club management, administration, marketing, scouting, coaching and many other areas. Therefore covering two sports in one creates very in depth material for students and potentially increases the opportunities for them to secure placements and employment opportunities after the course.
