Going one-on-one with Mandjou Keita
Mandjou Keita

Mandjou Keita has made his presence felt around the USL First Division with a league-leading 11 goals and six assists on the season. The striker recently sat down to answer questions for 90:00 Magazine. Here is a sneak peek at his Q&A for the feature "Pitch Perfect."

Who was your favorite team growing up and why?
Growing up, my favorite team was AC Milan in Italy. They had players like Franco Baresi, Frank Rijkaard, Marcel Desailly and, who I think is one of the best players of all-time, George Weah.

The most intimidating place you've played...
I don't really have one yet. I consider all soccer stadiums as my home.

Who are a few of your favorite recording artists?
I love all sorts of music, but a few of my favorite artists are R. Kelly, Usher and the late Bob Marley. I also love all types of African music.

Who would you most like to meet outside of the soccer world?
It will definitely be Nelson Mandela.

What are some of your hobbies?
Watching TV, reading sports magazines and playing scrabble online.

Who is the biggest practical joker on the team?
I think it is defender David Hayes, with all of his jokes. But, he is a different man on the pitch.

You're playing in a co-ed 2 vs. 2 tournament - who do you want on your team?
There are many players that I admire and would want to play with. But there is one that I would especially want on my team, and that would be Lionel Messi.

What's been your career highlight so far?
I have a few moments in my career that I will not forget. The one I always consider as the best moment was my first selection to the nation team of my country (Guinea). I was just 17 years old.

Washington Freedom Women's Networking Night a Success!
This August, SMWW Executive Director, Liz Lashbrook, was invited to speak at the first annual Washington Freedom Women's Networking Night. Women from around the sports industry shared their stories and offered attendees great advice for succeeding in the sports industry. Below is a recap of the speakers and the event.

Sheila Johnson is the first African-American woman to be an owner or partner in three professional sports franchises: the Washington Capitals, (NHL), the Washington Wizards , (NBA), and the Washington Mystics  (WNBA). Sheila stressed the need for society to support women on the field and on the court as professional athletes by supporting the sponsors of women's professional sports. She mentioned that sponsors are shy to support professional women's sports even though they are aware that women do the majority of the purchasing. We need to change that model and buy brands that help keep professionLiz Lashbrook and Christine Brennanal women playing and modeling this confidence to our daughters!

Other speakers included Christine Brennan, sports columnist, TV and radio commentator and best-selling author. She is especially known for her coverage of the Olympics and figure skating. She has written three books on the subject. Christine spoke of The International Olympic Committee(IOC) voting

Liz Lashbrook, SMWW Executive Director urged attendees to encourage and support women who want to pursue sports careers. The MLB, NBA, MLS, NFL, and NHL all are looking to hire more women. Women actually have an advantage in the hiring process for teams opening up positions within the front office.

Mary Harvey COO of Women's Professional Soccer introduced attendees and hosted the event. Mary was the starting goalie for 1991 U.S. Women's National Team which won the inaugural 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup and a member of the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal   team. Harvey retired from international competition in 1996 following the Atlanta Olympics.  Off the field, Harvey served on U.S. Soccer's Board of Directors for 12 years, including 5 years on the Executive Committee; and on the U.S. Olympic Committee.  In 2003, Harvey was hired by FIFA to become its Director of Development, becoming the first woman and first American hired by the international governing body to run a division.

Maureen Hendricks Chairwoman of the Washington Freedom (with husband John), helped found the Women's United Soccer Association in 1999. After operating for three seasons, WUSA ceased operations in 2003. In 2004, the Hendricks and a group of investors attempted a financial rescue of the league to revive professional women's soccer in the United States. In April 2007, the WUSA announced a revival of the league, to occur in 2008.  The new league, Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), launched in March 2009.

The 2010 WPS College Draft will take place on January 15, 2010 at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, PA.  It is the second college draft held by Women's Professional Soccer to assign the WPS rights of college players to the American-based teams. Sports Management Worldwide is hosting a Soccer Career Conference at the WPS and MLS Superdraft.
