New Era High School Athletic Director Course

NOW RECEIVE GRAD CREDIT

If you're a high school athletic director charged with restructuring your department, then here's some good news for you:

SMWW's New Era High School Athletic Director course is now authorized for graduate credit!

And, as with all of our courses, it can be taken from anywhere in the world!

A note from a current student:

"I have found this course to be very beneficial to me.  As a veteran athletic administrator, I am always looking for new ideas that can help my program excel.

I have enjoyed the exchange of ideas and the communication with other students (who are nationwide) - right from my own home.

We are all dealing with budget issues, but this course has introduced some cutting edge technology to help generate funds and improve public relations within the community.

Whether you are a new or a veteran athletic administrator, this would be a great course to take!"

Margaret M. Conaty, CAA
Mansfield High School

Individuals learn how to successfully coordinate corporate sponsorship, outsource concessions that make money utilizing permission based e-marketing campaigns, and effectively manage community and media relations.

Students will also walk away understanding the art of high tech booster clubs, web based scheduling and organization, NCAA recruiting guidelines and regulations, decreasing financial dependence on the district office, and much, much more.

Under the tutelage of Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, this eight week online course will train future high school Athletic Directors by examining old problems in a new light to inspire creative solutions while utilizing new technology.

It is absolutely imperative that future Athletic Directors learn to deal with the funding crisis in education nationwide.

High school sports programs will soon need to be run like those in college, and directors must find ways to enhance revenues while maintaining cost controls and keeping a full menu of offerings for student athletes.

Let us show you how to do it!

FAN ETIQUETTE MUST BEGIN WITH PLAYER ETIQUETTE

What recently happened in the NBA's version of "Friday Night Fights" has sent shock waves throughout the sports world. And it's about time!

Last year when I co-authored the book on Fan Etiquette, I mentioned in the preface that fan etiquette must begin with player etiquette.

Athletes' behavior on the field and court often is a precursor to what goes on in the stands. Players basically set an example for fans through their actions, signaling to those in attendance that certain behavior is acceptable, no matter how despicable it may be.

Tragically, the knock-down drag-out fight between the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and some fans last Friday night, will probably go down in history as one of the worst fights the NBA has ever seen. And if the Pistons/Pacers brawl wasn't enough to make you sick, another ugly smack down between players during the Clemson/South Carolina football game occurred the very next day. In what was the final game of his brilliant career, Gamecocks coach Lou Holtz sadly had to bear witness to behavior that was remote and unthinkable when he first entered the coaching ranks 33 years ago.

Now that we've all had a chance to digest last week's maniacal behavior and the damage it has caused the world of sports, it's time for us to collectively ask: was this just a bad weekend or are we entering a new era with a dark cloud?

Unfortunately, it looks as though the dark cloud theory is more accurate. Coupled with the recent on field brouhaha between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, and this summer's Oakland A's chair tossing incident, last weekend's brawls are really just the latest of what has become par for the course.

The real tragedy is the commentary offered by many current and former athletes in the media who feel a player has a right to defend himself when a fan throws a plastic cup at him. GULP! Are they serious? I've repeatedly said that purchasing a ticket doesn't give a fan a right to degrade, humiliate or excessively taunt a player. By the same token, an athlete hasn't a right to leap in the stands and recklessly throw punches because an irresponsible fan tossed beer and ice at him. It is up to security officials, not players, to keep unruly fans in check.

If there's a potential silver lining in all of this, it's that the sports community and mass media now appear ready to discuss fan/player behavior.

Fans, players and coaches alike are debating the issue from cause, prevention and punishment. And it's certainly refreshing that NBA Commissioner David Stern has applied some real justice to those involved in the Detroit disgrace, dishing out to Pacer Ron Artest the longest suspension in league history -- 73 games.

Both sides need to take a time out and realize players should play, fans should fan, coaches should coach and security should secure. Let's hope that players will never again feel compelled to defend themselves in this manner. This incident should serve as a reminder to players and fans everywhere that this kind of behavior only destroys and disgraces the game they both love.

Sports Tid Bits From Dr. Lashbrook

- MLB agent Scott Boras represents both Bernie Williams and Carlos Beltran, so he was able to convince Bernie to agree to switch positions to either right field or DH so that the Yankees can try to sign center fielder Beltran.

- This year's NFL story has been the rookies getting playing time. From Big Ben in Pittsburgh to Eli and Hensen being named the starters. Three rookie WR have looked good. Larry Fitzgerald with Arizona and Michael Clayton with the Bucs are both having good rookie seasons.  Roy Williams in Detroit is emerging, despite suffering through injury. Michael Boulware in Seattle (2nd Rd. pick) has 4 picks on the season and may have saved Seattle's season with the game winning touchdown return. Kevin Jones in Detroit is starting to help a Detroit run game that has been nonexsistent in the past (100 yard game last week). Sean Taylor has three INTs on the season, but two of those came in the last two weeks.

- Fred Jones of the Indiana Pacers has seen his average jump way up as a result of the melee in Detroit. Since Jones is in a contract year, expect agent Bill Duffy to get an inflated contract for a player with athletic ability but little drive to work on his jump shot. Jones will probably benefit from the guaranteed money in the NBA and the Pacers will probably lose.

- Pedro uses the Yankees to try to drive up his contract offer from the Red Sox. Steinbenner won't have a problem watching the Sox spend more money on a pitcher that has seen his better days. However, I think Epstein will stick to his offer, which reflects market value.

- How about the Sonics, but can it last? I like the pure point in Ridnour and a team full of jump shooters, something not plentiful in today's NBA.

- Of the international players taken in the 2003 NBA draft, only three players (Carlos Delfino, Boris Diaw and Planinic) are getting real minutes.  From the 2004 class, only Beno Udrih (28th pick) is playing any meaningful minutes.  There could be a backlash brewing from the international trend seen in recent years and NCAA players' stock may begin to rise.
