2005 SMWW Annual Workshop

The 2005 SMWW Sports Agent Workshop was the biggest and best ever! We had over 100 attendees from 25 different states as well as Canada and Europe. The attendees were excited to hear insights from a variety of speakers with many different backgrounds and everyone agreed that there was a lot to learn.

SMWW welcomed 35 year veteran NFL agent Jim Salono who has represented over 700 NFL clients and currently represents head coaches Bill Cower & Herman Edwards as well as Defensive Coordinator Ray Rhodes. Salono was joined by James Camten, Offensive Line Coach for the Green Bay Packers. Salono shared his insights on how the industry has changed over the years and told the group to treat every client the same, no matter if they make $100,000 or $10 million a year.

SMWW was able to secure the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Indiana Pacers, David Morway, who is also a former successful agent in 5 different sports. Morway shared insights about how to get started in the business, the pit-falls he encountered and how the front office does business with agents.

Sally Sullivan former agent of Venus and Serena Williams, NFL player Lincoln Kennedy and many other superstars, spoke on securing endorsements and other opportunities for your athlete. She reflected on years of experience with Reebok, Nike and Adidas and related that the local car dealership in the athlete's hometown should not be ignored.

Charlie Wright with Athletes Performance gave us the insights on training athletes and preparing them for the draft. The importance of having a nice facility as apart of your recruiting pitch as well as getting your athletes in tip-top shape is something SMWW felt was invaluable for its attendees.

Dan Wilker and Raymond Braum from Morgan Stanley shared their advice on setting athletes up for their financial futures' and how agents can secure their recruits' a line of credit in-order to stay competitive with other sports agencies.

Matt Brock, Bill Kent and Dr. Lashbrook gave us the keys to success in their version of Recruiting 101. Next year, our new attendees will all come back as successful sports agents with multiple professional athletes!

Deana Garner, NCAA Representative for Agents, Gambling and Amateurism, shared the ins and outs of how to stay in compliance with all the rules and regulations with her up to date review of "do's and dont's"

Jim Kuzmich, MLB sports agent explained the differences in recruiting and representing clients in baseball versus other sports. He brought with him his client Garret Barger, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher who shared his experience of selecting an agent and what it's like for a player within the MLB system.

KC Callero, SMWW Director of Overseas Basketball, gave us a terrific walk thru on how to promote our basketball clients in Europe and a ranking of all the top leagues and competitions for European Basketball. He also highlighted the salary range and insights that are needed to successfully negotiate with a team in Europe.

The highlight for all involved had to be the networking and relationship building. We are excited to know all the faces that go with the names! Click here to see some photos of this year's event.

Mark your calendars today for the 2006 Sports Agent Workshop, February 24-25. Indianapolis Hyatt during the NFL combine. See you in Indy!

Baseball General Manager And Scouting Course

The First Step Towards Becoming A MLB Associate Scout!

SMWW believes in providing students with the hands-on skills necessary to get a foot in the door and realize their dream job.

Individuals taking our Baseball GM and Scouting Course will be provided a basic yet sound foundation for learning the scouting profession.

This course is essential for those wishing to become MLB scouts. Always on the cutting edge of technology and teaching, SMWW students are constantly presented new ideas that are on the horizon and not found in typical text books and classrooms.

Through his weekly online chat tutelage, course instructor and ESPN analyst Rob Neyer gives students a deeper insight into baseball than they can find anywhere else.

"A student graduating from this course will learn from baseball minds of yesterday and today a solid foundation for scouting and sabermetrics utilized in the game today,"

says Jon Weil, a scout for the Kansas City Royals who took the course.

"This will provide former ballplayers, coaches or baseball fans an inner knowledge on how it all works behind the scenes."

For career minded students, Weil notes that a good starting point in baseball is anything that will get your foot in the door, whether working for a minor league affiliate, in a Major League front office, or as a scout.

"The most entry-level of all scouting jobs," says Weil, "is the Associate Scout, or b.Bird Dog.'"

He says many associates are current high school coaches that report to Area Supervisors or Part-time scouts on what they see in their given area.

"If their club drafts their recommended player, the associate is often rewarded nominally, with the money increasing incrementally with each move up the minor league ladder," says Weil.

"However, the opportunity to be an associate is a tremendous honor and is a very important key to the success of the draft if utilized properly. I encourage all who get that chance to take it seriously and work their hardest if they want to attain a position in the game."

Our GM and Scouting Course is truly a gem. Just ask SMWW student John Doe, who is now an Associate Scout as a result of enrolling in it.

You can do the same! Today's student may be tomorrow's scout.

Another Example Of SMWW Advisors Changing The Industry!

As reported recently in the Corvalis Gazette-Times, former Oregon State football players Adam Rothenfluh and Dwight Wright are both embarking on careers in sports. Wright, a stocky but undersized running back for the Beavers, is going to try and make it in the NFL even if it means going the free agent route.

Rothenfluh, who was a back up quarterback at OSU and is now an SMWW Agent Advisor, is going to try and help his friend get to the next level.

SMWW believes that the best agent/athlete relationships stem from friendship and an understanding of all facets of an athlete's life.

Our agent advisors are able to give complete representation to their clients because they've either played with or been friends with their clients and are better able to meet the athletes' needs than a corporate agent who has multiple clients.

"Since Dwight and I have been friends for so long, it's pretty nice to be able to help him out," Rothenfluh told the Gazette-Times. That friendship will be key as Rothenfluh helps Wright through the great challenge of making the pros.

"We are trying to train student advisers around the world for a more 1-on-1 approach," said SMWW Pres. Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, "I think you are going to see this model more and more. I think the system is broke, and I'm trying to fix it."

This is just one of many examples of how SMWW agent advisors can get started as Sports Agents.

We have over 100 Agent Advisors all over the world that are starting out with their first clients. You could be next!
