SBM student takes position with Atlanta Hawks
Eric Stockman

The Sports Business Management (SBM) course is among the most popular of all of SMWW's courses. The reason for this is because the main focus of the course is to help those who are interested in getting their foot in the door with a team and begin working in the front office.

This month we bring you the success story of Eric Stockman. Stockman, who is originally from the Ohio area and is a recent graduate of Bowling Green University, enrolled in the (SBM) course in April of 2007.

SMWW: Eric, could you tell us about your new position with the Atlanta Hawks?

Eric: I took a position with the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers as an Inside Sales Representative. As an Inside Sales Rep, I am in charge of bringing new business to Philips Arena. To do this, I make calls to businesses, as well as individuals who have bought individual game tickets in the past through Ticketmaster. My job is to contact these different people on the phone, and then try to set up a tour of Philips Arena to show them different seat locations and the different amenities available to them if they become a season ticket holder.

There are times when customers may purchase over the phone right away, but it is better for the customers to be able to sit in his or her potential seats so that he or she is completely satisfied. It is a very challenging job, as is any sales position.

SMWW: How did SMWW and the SBM course help you secure this new position? How long did it take you to get this position once you joined the program?

Eric: Through the SBM course, I was able to learn the best practices for becoming a sales representative for a professional sports organization. Through our audio chats, I was able to work on my different sales pitches with Bret Polvorosa and Tom Leip. I feel that by being a part of these chats, I was able to have an upper leg on some of my coworkers who were not able to have this opportunity.

I was able to attain this position about two weeks after I started working with Bret Polvorosa on my resume. He was able to use his professional contacts to find this position and get me an interview.

SMWW: How aware were the Hawks of SMWW and its instructors?

Eric: Some of the management down in Atlanta are aware of SMWW and the programs that are offered. Bret Polvorosa was a tremendous help in connecting me with the team and helping me get an interview.

SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want to get a career in sports? Why?

Eric: I would recommend this course to a person who is passionate about having a career in the sports world. There is no substitute for hard work and passion. If a prospective student thinks that only by taking this class they will be guaranteed a job after it is completed, they better think again.

SMWW will put you in the best position possible to start your career in sports. So if a potential student is willing to do the work, then I would definitely recommend the course as a great way to start out in sports! The course material is also very relevant to the jobs out in the sports world. The different scripts that are taught throughout the course are very similar to the scripts I trained with in Atlanta. So if a student is looking for a job in sports and wants an early start on the competition, take the SBM course!

SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?

Eric: I would like to say thank you to the entire SMWW staff for helping me get a start in the sports world. I realize that these jobs are not easy to come by and I was very lucky to meet the right people to put me in the right position to get a job. Also joining SMWW will also provide many more networking opportunities throughout life. The more organizations and groups that a person can get involved in will lead to more job opportunities in the future due to the amount of successful people you know!

SMWW agents have success in MLB Draft
MLB Draft

A host of Agent Advisors with SMWW were active in this year's MLB Draft. Many were representing players and others were acting as advisors. If you are unfamiliar with the advising process in baseball for high school players or underclassmen, then SMWW's Athlete Management Course is a great way to learn all of the rules and regulations for agents and advisors.

As many of the players that SMWW has advised have a chance to play college baseball, we can not reveal their names in-order to protect their eligibility.

Chris Sgouros from New York was the most active agent advisor by far this year. Chris was involved in advising players in the following rounds: 3rd Round, 8th Round, 11th Round, 14th Round, 25th Round, 27th Round and the 39th Round.

SMWW's Director of Baseball, Joe Bonahoom, was very active this year in working with Chris as well as SMWW's other Agent Advisors. Together, they made this by far the most successful baseball draft in SMWW's history. Stay tuned and we'll fill you in on all the details as the signing period continues to unfold.

Recap of SMWW's Career Conference at the NHL Draft
NHL Draft

Sports Management Worldwide hosted a very successful Sports Career Conference at the NHL entry draft in Columbus, Ohio on June 22, 2007. Approximately 100 attendees gained invaluable knowledge into how to launch a career in professional sports from speakers such as Stanley Cup champion GM Brian Burke, NHL agent Tim Cranston, International Scouting Services General Manager Matt Ebbs, and many others.

Most attendees were surprised to learn that Doug Armstrong (General Manager of the Dallas Stars) and Dave Nonis (General Manager of Vancouver Canucks) started their careers in hockey by doing any job they could get, just to get a start. Both started out at the bottom and worked for years in areas such as team services and video editing.

The final highlight of the conference was sitting up close and personal with team personnel, agents, and draftees at the Entry Draft on Friday night. Not only was the draft exciting to watch, it provided an excellent opportunity for conference attendees to network with key people and to see some future hockey stars.

Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us in Columbus, we hope you all enjoyed being there as much as we did. If anyone has pictures from the conference or the draft that they would like to see on the SMWW website, email them to liz@sportsmanagementworldwide.com and they will be posted soon!

Plans for next year's draft are already in the works so stay tuned to the website for more information.

Motor sports student has a good day at the track
Fabio

Fabio Santos has been a life-long fan of the motor sports industry. He came to Sports Management Worldwide to follow his passion and hope that one day, he could work full time in the motor sports industry. After enrolling in the Motor Sports Management Course, Santos discovered that SMWW and its instructors are the real thing.

The Indianapolis 500 is amongst the biggest event in motor sports world. Tom Blattler, instructor for SMWW's Motor Sports Management Course, has been involved with the event for years. At this year's 500, Santos was given the opportunity to go behind the scenes with Blattler and see business side of racing.

"I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to meet and introduce myself to such an inspiring and knowledgeable individual such as Tom Blattler.," said Santos. "As busy as he is with the happenings at Indy Series and the ALMS, he took the time to invite and provide me with credentials to experience on a first hand basis the operations that take place at a race weekend. Along with this chance, Tom provided me with the opportunity to meet the movers and shakers of the sport, which in-turn will hopefully deliver an opportunity to join the industry."

"I want to thank SMWW for creating this opportunity for people with a passion for motor sports. The course has taught me a lot and above all, introduced me to an unknown part of a sport that I've followed for so long. Many thanks goes to Mr. Tom Blattler. With his mentoring, I was able to infiltrate many parts of motor sports I never was able to be a part of before."

Baseball student interviews GM Billy Beane
Billy Beane

One of the unique opportunities that all SMWW students get when taking an online course with SMWW is the chance to interview someone in the front office of a team. Many of the people are high profile and work in the positions that our students hope to find their way to one day. For many students, this turns out to be their favorite part of the course.

Recently, Bill Jordan, a Baseball GM & Scouting course student, got the opportunity to interview the Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane. Beane is considered one of the smartest and most revolutionary General Managers in the history of baseball for his use of moneyball type of statistical analysis.

Maury Brown, an instructor of the Baseball GM & Scouting Course, posted the interview on his website (bizofbaseball.com) and the interview was then picked up by USA Today and posted on their website (see below for the article on usatoday.com).

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

Bill Jordan: How do you as a General Manager handle the First-Year draft? How much do you rely on your scouts to do, and throughout the year, how much communication goes on between you and the scouts?

Billy Beane: Well, we have a lot of different scouts covering different areas. Most of my communication is vis-a-vis the scouting director and my player personnel director, who usually try to see the top 100 to 150 players in the country. Usually I will go and talk to the area scouts before the draft when it comes to certain players or certain high profile individuals.

We bring all of our scouts in for the draft, and once they come in for the draft there is a lot of interaction on certain parts, but my involvement is mainly on the higher round guys. Usually through the first three or four rounds, and once we get deeper into the draft, that's when you are really relying heavily on your area scouts, and the scouting director will coordinate that a lot as the draft goes along.

Bill Jordan: How much did your life and career change after Moneyball was published?

Billy Beane: Well, surely it was a lot of publicity and it brought a lot of opportunity, not just in the game, but outside of the game. I've met a lot of people that I probably wouldn't have normally met if I hadn't been exposed and Michael [Lewis] hadn't written the book, so the opportunities beyond baseball; I'm very thankful for.

It brought the organization and myself some publicity that we wouldn't have expected, but I think the good certainly outweighs the bad. I think we are privileged that an author of Michael's caliber would have any interest and people outside the game of baseball would have any interest in reading about what we tried to do here.

Bill Jordan: What is the most important thing you look for when you are hiring someone for the Athletics?

Billy Beane: It's hard to say if there is one thing. Most important I would say is that you get a lot of resumes that are certainly impressive from an academic standpoint, which is nice. But I think there is no greater influence in an interview than the person itself to have the personality, the passion that they bring. Even being someone who is very well rounded, you can usually tell that to a much greater degree in person than you can reading a resume. Which regardless of where somebody went to school or how they faired in school, I like to meet the person. It really comes down to whether you think the person has that passion and that drive to get their career started and to be successful in their career.
