SMWW Success Stories

SMWW's Sports Business Management Course is a great place to start for anyone wanting to get a jumpstart in the sports industry and begin working immediately. Instructors Bret Polvorosa and Tom Leip do an excellent job providing students a timeless skill set which is transferable from industry to industry.

This one of a kind course is one of our most popular because of its record of students obtaining positions with organizations around the world. Aspiring sports professionals taking this curriculum continue to be given the skills that businesses, college and pro teams look for when hiring new employees.

Brian Gioia is a former SBM student who is now doing an internship with the Chicago Bulls in their sales department. This month, we interviewed Brian to learn more about his experience with our course and how things are going with the Bulls.

What was your experience like in the SBM Course?

I enjoyed my experience in taking the SBM course. It felt just like a classroom setting with the live chats, despite the fact you don't get to see anyone in person. I loved the fact that I was able to do the course from my own home which made me feel more relaxed going into it. The content of the course was presented in an easy format for people to understand, and with the live chats each week, it really brings it all together.

How did the course prepare you for your new position with the Bulls?

SMWW has so many courses to choose from, I decided to take the SBM Course to help me get my career going. SBM helped me understand what to expect before I arrived at the Bulls. I felt a lot more comfortable and confident stepping my foot inside the United Center to start my new job because of this course.

What is it like going to work for an NBA team every day?

Walking into the United Center everyday, and passing the Michael Jordan statue on the way in is a pretty exciting feeling to experience. I love the people I work with and seeing the Bulls brand everyday, a team I am passionate about, makes each day even more satisfying. On July 13th I was able to witness the Ben Wallace press conference live, which is something I didn't even think I would be able to be a part of. Just being a part of a successful organization is something special, and this course helped me get my foot in the door with the Chicago Bulls.

Talk about working in sales and what you would say to someone else who is interested in a position with a team, but isn't sure if they want to work in sales

The SBM course really prepares you for a future in the front office and specifically, it teaches a lot about sales. The course is in no way intimidating or should discourage anyone thinking to start a future in sports, even if they are not sure if they would like to do sales. It gives you great insight on what to expect once you start your position. I have found my new position to be different every day and sales is a great challenge that I look forward to working on when I get to work every day.

New International Sports Business Management Course

SMWW has had so much success with its Sports Business Management Course that it has launched a new International version of the course. SMWW is proud to announce that we have chosen Shaun Graham to head up the program. Graham has over 15 years of experience in professional sports marketing. Graham is active in training and consulting with over 50 professional clubs and leagues throughout the UK.

Graham was selected because of his tremendous experience and the high regard he received from clubs in Europe. He brings a large list of European contacts and will continue to be active in working directly with clubs in Europe. He has worked with clubs such as Manchester United FC, Leicester Tigers, NEC Harlequins, Everton FC, Fulham FC and Llanelli Scarlets, to name a few.

"When Bret Polvorosa approached me about doing an SBM International, I was interested right away because of the success that SMWW has had with its course," said Graham. "Since I am already working with many of these clubs in Europe, it felt like a good fit for me to bring my experience and my contacts to the course. I look forward to working with those in Europe who are interested in working with a professional club. SMWW's course format certainly provides a wonderful format for teaching and learning."

Profiling Agent Advisor Elliot Washington

This month we decided to choose an agent advisor who has known SMWW and its President, Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, for a long time. Elliot took the Athlete Management five years ago and after going out on his own for many years, he has rejoined SMWW and is bring our experience and added strength to SMWW's agency.

What has your experience been like working in the agent field on your own the last five years?

"The experience of being on my own as an agent for the past 5 years was definitely educational and beneficial for my future as an advisor. For most agents starting off working with any company, they start you off as a runner and you basically hang around the locker rooms and chase players for them. For me, being a former division 1 basketball player at the University of Alabama, that was degrading and not a situation I would let myself be involved with. I was licensed for the past five years as a NFLPA Contract Advisor."

Since joining SMWW, what has changed, what do you enjoy, what has been helpful?

"I was with Lynn Lashbrook in his original Sports Management Internship, so seeing the company grow and add more resources is very exciting. Lynn always stated and enforced doing business with integrity, and he has kept that principle in his company. Finding someone in this business that is trustworthy is almost impossible. Everyone is trying to cheat and lie to gain access to a player. Lynn has maintained high integrity in the business and builds his company on good relationships with people. That is why I'm back with the company and I feel this was the best move I could have made for my professional career!"

Tell me how you were able to sign four players this year?

"I was able to sign the 4 players this year by using my everyday contacts. I rejoined the company in February and decided that I was going to deal with basketball players for the first time in my career. One big reason for that is because of the strength of SMWW Basketball. Basketball is a natural for me and next year will be my first year recruiting for basketball; I'm really excited about the future for me in Basketball!"

Other things that you want to talk about in regards to SMWW or the agent business?

"Honestly, the agent business is tough and can be cut-throat. It is sometimes hard on a young agent at the beginning but with patience and integrity, it can be successful if you align yourself with the right company. It is essential that you find good people to work with so you can compete with other companies for elite athletes. I look forward to working with SMWW and having a major impact on the NBA and European markets in basketball. So far it is obvious that SMWW has the expertise and resources to make that goal a reality!!"

Two Clients Drafted in the 2006 NHL Draft!

SMWW's certified NHL agent, Tim Cranston, had two of his clients drafted in the 2006 NHL Draft. Tim's top two clients, Bryce Swan and Ryan Hillier of the Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Club (QMJHL), were drafted to the Anaheim Ducks (2nd Round, #38 Overall) and New York Rangers (3rd Round, #84 Overall) respectively.

"The Draft is a very exciting time for everybody involved," said Cranston. "It is the culmination of years of work from all sides and the fulfillment of dreams. For my clients, flying 4,000 miles to Vancouver from Halifax to be drafted was a lifetime experience that they will never forget."

Before obtaining his law degree and becoming a certified NHL Agent, Tim spent 15 years as a professional hockey player. In addition to his work as an agent and his work in the legal field, Tim continues to coach and train young hockey players. His years of experience around the game helped him create solid relationships with these clients that were based on years of hockey training and personal mentoring.

"I have known and worked with these players (Swan & Hillier) since they have been at the Pee-Wee level (12-13 yrs. old). I have trained both of these players along the way (on and off the ice, physically and mentally) in addition to the personal mentoring and services I offer directly to the players as a part of my agent/family advisor service."

Cranston communicated with every NHL club before the draft and was able to correctly predict where his clients would get drafted. However, this is not always an easy thing to do.

"There are never any guarantees from anybody about actual draft spots but through due diligence and doing your homework, you can have a pretty good idea. I had my own instincts based fundamentally on how well the players have played during the season and the general scouting buzz around the rinks on a game-by-game basis."

Scouts do not generally "tip their hand" about where they have your player rated on their depth chart but they will tell you some of the things they like and don't like. This feedback takes serious legwork to get and is very valuable to the players throughout the season, especially if they need to make changes to their game style.

With the rule changes in the NHL when the new collective bargaining was signed, the game has changed and has become much more up-tempo. This effected how every club in the NHL views prospects and makes their selection.

"By the caliber and skill-sets of the players drafted this year it is clear that the new NHL game is taking roots. Speed is the dominant trait teams are looking for from a player, followed by the player's overall knowledge of the game and thought process (especially under pressure)."

For those interested in working with SMWW as an agent in hockey or any sport, the Athlete Management Course is the first step to getting out there and recruiting and signing your own clients. SMWW has a core of directors in many sports that have years of experience and are available to assist you with high level recruiting and the draft process.
