Student Takes Director of Media Position

BJPeople wanting to break into the ultra-competitive world of sports business come to us with a variety of backgrounds, but they all share the desire to obtain a position in one of the many different areas in the front offices of sports properties. SMWW’s Sports Business Management course continues to help students get their foot in the door and achieve their dream of working in sports.

This month, we interviewed BJ Cardin. BJ has a background in print journalism, and came to us wanting to work in sports media and communications. He is now working full-time in sports, while continuing to communicate with our instructors and constantly striving to advance his career.

SMWW: Could you tell us about your new position?

BJ: I am the Communications Manager for the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League. I officially joined the team right before its inaugural season began a year ago. I am part of the two-man communications staff that handles all media- and public-relations work.

I help maintain our website and the dance team’s website; write and send press releases and publications; book TV and radio interviews for players and coaches; work with broadcast talent and TV/radio partners on game-day production, our weekly TV show, and weekly coach’s radio show. The Brigade front office is very small, even for an AFL team, so I am also involved in other projects related to community relations, operations, and ticket sales.

SMWW: How did the Sports Business Management course help you get into sports?

BJ: BJ: I had looked at SMWW while still in college, thinking it could fill the gap with courses that my school couldn’t provide. When I started considering leaving my last job, with a newspaper, I went to SMWW to seek that missing piece of my resume. I started the course in October but didn’t quite finish, because my opportunity with the Brigade came while in the course.

I can honestly say, though, that I wouldn’t be working for the Brigade if it weren’t for the course. I learned a lot, and Tom Leip gave me the best advice possible when he told me to be proactive and up-front about what I want. If it weren’t for his advice, I wouldn’t have walked into the Brigade office -- where I didn’t know a soul - - and handed someone my resume. That one fearless act got me the job and it wouldn’t have happened without SMWW.

SMWW: How do you see SMWW continuing to help you advance your career in sports?

BJ: I continue to stay in touch with the course instructors. They are great mentors and obviously they know a lot of people in the industry. They recently connected me with a friend in an MLB office so I am pursuing that for the future.

SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?

BJ: Don’t be afraid of your resume. You’re probably more qualified than you think. Many people who want to work in sports already have the foundation of talent and knowledge, but their abilities haven’t been refined.

SMWW can be a big help in doing that, but you should be willing to do a lot more than e-mail a resume or make a phone call if you really want a job in sports. And when you’re just trying to break in, there is no bad job. Take every opportunity that comes your way and don’t ever fear the next step, because a good challenge never hurts.

Adam Prossin Gets His Agent Career Revved Up!

Scott JenkinsThis month, we have selected agent-advisor Adam Prossin to discuss his involvement in the agent business. When we first met Adam, he was working as a tax attorney. His passion for sports brought him to SMWW to learn more about the business of representing professional athletes. Since then, the agent business has brought him many new experiences.

SMWW: Please tell us about your involvement with race-car driver Scott Jenkins.

Adam: Scott Jenkins has been racing competitively for 12 seasons. He has progressed through various forms of racing from karts through professional Star Mazda race cars (open-wheel Indy- style) and he’s been a winner at every level.

Over the last six weeks, Scott has been invited to test with several NASCAR teams in preparation for the 2007 season, and he’s done extremely well. Scott is a tremendously skilled driver who has shown he can adapt well to any type of race car he climbs into. Scott's main goal now is to work his way into one of the three national NASCAR series as a full- time competitor. The sky’s the limit for Scott Jenkins, and it’s very exciting.

SMWW: What are you working on now for Scott and other clients?

Adam: We are actively pursuing a ride for Scott for the 2007 season in the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series, which is the highest level of regional racing in the NASCAR program. To that end, we’ve put together a program, with various levels of commitment and brand exposure, that we’re offering to sponsors for the 2007 season.

I also represent Travis Mash, current world-record-holding powerlifter in the 220 lbs. weight class with an overall lift score of 2,414 lbs. in competition. Travis has recently decided to expand his training regimen, with the goal of earning a spot on the USA Bobsled team. We are continuously seeking sponsorship opportunities for Travis to help with his training and competitive commitments.

And finally, I represent several football players who have played at various professional levels. I am continuously working with these athletes to help create opportunities for them to advance to the next level, with the main goal, of course, putting them in a position to play in the NFL. Endorsements and personal appearances can also help generate extra income for these athletes at all levels.

SMWW: How has SMWW’s course & Agent- Advisor program helped you get into the agent business?

Adam: The Athlete Management Course provided me with a basic understanding of the sports agent business and gave me insights into the day-to-day life of a sports agent. I would definitely recommend the course and the agent-advisor program to someone who is starting out in the sports agent business to give them some understanding of what they should expect in being a sports agent.

Since the course has ended, the agent-advisor program has given me the opportunity to come into contact with athletes who compete in a variety sports, located all over the world. There is a plethora of resources available to the agent-advisors from SMWW’s professional staff. The agent-advisor program also provides the new agent with a network of experienced agents to lean on for information and support when you need it.

SMWW: Anything else you would like to say?

Adam: I attended the annual conference in Indianapolis in February 2006, and was very impressed with the program SMWW put on. There was a diverse panel of speakers, all of whom provided tremendous insight into their various areas of expertise. I would highly recommend that anyone attempting to get into the sports-agent field should attend this conference for the educational experience along with the networking opportunities. You will not regret it. I look forward to seeing everyone in Indianapolis again next month.

Hockey Student Lands With Orca Bay

The SMWW Hockey GM & Scouting Course continues to help hockey fans become hockey employees. Thanks to the course’s use of RinkNet software -- which is used by the majority of NHL clubs -- students come out of the course with a great experience, a marketable skill set and a sharper resume.

This month we bring you the story of Karl Christensen.

SMWW: Karl, could you tell us about your new position?

Karl: I’ve taken a position with Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Vancouver Canucks. Although I am not officially scouting at the NHL level yet, I feel this course has given me a definite advantage over others who may apply for scouting positions because I now have my foot in the door.

The supervisor who interviewed me saw that I have both RinkNet experience and the strong ambition to scout for the club. He even said he thought I had a good chance to advance within the organization.

SMWW: What was your experience like in the Hockey GM & Scouting course?

Karl: It was excellent. I recommend the course to anyone considering a career in hockey, or even to anybody with more than a casual interest in the game. I took this course very seriously, as I wanted to build a career in the sport, but I know there are people out there who may just want more insight into hockey. This course is for either person. I would say the audio chats, as a classroom experience, are years ahead of their time.

SMWW: How did it help you gain employment with the team?

Karl: I believe it showed my initial interviewer -- who’s now my immediate supervisor -- that I have ambition to advance within the organization, which is just one quality he was looking for in an employee.

SMWW: How did it prepare you for your current position? ?

Karl: I feel this course has given me the confidence to approach Ron Delorme, the Canucks’ Chief Amateur Scout, and ask about a scouting position with the club, which is something I wouldn't have dreamed of doing before taking the course. With the position I now hold with the organization, the opportunity to meet with Mr. Delorme has never been so close.

SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want to get into the business of hockey?

Karl: Absolutely, without hesitation. And I have done so on a number of occasions.

SMWW: Anything else you would like to say?

Karl: To prospective students: Don’t give up. Be willing to take an entry-level job if that’s what you’re offered. It’s all about getting that first foot in that first door.

I would also like to thank Dr. Lashbrook, Dino Caputo, Michael Oke and, most of all, my classmates. I am very grateful to all of you and look forward to speaking to you in future Sunday chats.
