SBM Student Lands at Dodger Stadium

If you’re like most people out there, you get up every day, you go to work, and you earn just enough to pay the bills. But do you love what you do? Do you wish you could work in sports, and feed your true passion? If so, this story is for you...

Steve Gallaugher has watched sports his whole life. He tried on his own to get a job with a team, only to discover how hard that can be. After working for years at a job he didn’t enjoy, he decided it was time to do something about it. Steve enrolled in SMWW’s Sports Business Management Course, and good things have been happening since...

SMWW: What’s it like to work for an MLB team?

Steve: I can't describe it. It's like you’re in a dream. I used to wake up and go to work at a crummy job that I couldn’t stand. Now, though, every morning I drive from Fullerton to Los Angeles, and I arrive at Dodger Stadium and my eyes just pop open. I really cherish the opportunity to work with a sports organization, especially the Los Angeles Dodgers.

SMWW: Can you tell us about your new position?

Steve: I'm an Inside Sales Account Executive. I work with several other guys under the direction of our Director, Robert Ruiz. I'm making calls and managing accounts for people who have attended games in the past. I get to talk about the Dodgers all day on the phone.

SMWW: What was your experience like in the SBM course?

Steve: At first, I was a little nervous because I didn't know what to expect or if I was going to succeed. At the same time, I was working in a job I simply couldn’t stand any longer. When the course began, everything just fell into place: I got to meet a lot of great people; Bret and Tom were great instructors; and processing all the information was easy because I prepared myself. When I finished the class, I was sad that it was over, but ready to move forward. Overall, it was an awesome experience.

SMWW: How did it help you gain employment with the team?

Steve: For me, connections were the ice- breaker. I went to a job fair in Carson, California, and I went to different stations, presented my resume to teams and told them about myself. Before taking this course, I didn’t have a lot of sports experience that I could talk about, and so I didn’t get a job. Bret recommended that I go to another one after the course. When I mentioned to teams that I was taught by Bret, the people representing the team knew that I was trained well. They all gave Bret high regards!

SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?

Steve: I know the person who is thinking about taking classes from SMWW could be skeptical about taking the dive. I want to tell you that it is the best investment you can make. This company cares about sports fans who want to get a job in sports and reach their potential. I now get to experience the dream everyday.

As my wise grandfather used to say, "Pursuing something that makes you happy will make you rich; pursuing something that makes you power and money will make you poor."

Agent Advisor Jim Storin Tells Us Why the Surf is Definitely Up

SMWW’s Athlete Management Course presents a unique opportunity for successful graduates of the program to become Agent Advisors with SMWW’s Sports Agency, and immediately begin representing professional athletes.

SMWW’s agency grows every month. While most people who have interest in getting into the field of athlete representation think of the traditional sports, our agents have discovered the wealth of opportunity out there to work with athletes outside of the norm. This month we take you to the sandy beaches of South Africa to tell you about agent- advisor Jim Storin and his recent success.

SMWW: Jim, please tell us about your newest client.

Jim: Jim: Nikita Robb, only seventeen, is one of the best young surfers in the world. This young lady just continues to get better and place high in tournaments. She won the Target US Open in California last year. This year she placed third in the 2006 Billabong World Junior Championship in Australia. She is competing all over the world and continues to place in the top three everywhere she goes.

In January 2007, Nikita will start her first full season in the World Qualifying Series (WQS). Nikita has also qualified to represent South Africa at the World Juniors in Portugal. Nikita is the kind of young woman who young women all over the world can look to as a role model. She will not allow anything or anyone to get in her way of fulfilling her dreams. (Select this text to view her website)

SMWW: What type of sponsorship deals have you been able to secure for her?

Jim: Finding sponsorship opportunities is no easy task. Except when you have a girl like Nikita. As she is from South Africa, she is obviously well known in the South African surfing world. However, being that I live in North America, I have researched industry specific sponsors in the States. I found a small surf apparel and board company out of New Jersey called Ocean Lifestyles. When I contacted the founder of the company, they were just in the infancy stage of starting their surf team.

In just three weeks, I was able to work a deal that would give Nikita some guaranteed money and many other incentive-based earnings. For example, this past weekend she will receive money for winning the event, and money for having the Ocean Lifestyles logo visible for a photo that was published on the Web (and if the photo gets published in a magazine, she gets another bonus).

SMWW: How did the Athlete Management Course help you get into the business?

Jim In retrospect, the course was laid out perfectly for me. The information provided has been useful to me every day. The course teaches the reality of the business. When you start contacting athletes for the first time, it’s vitally important that you’re prepared to immediately help them achieve their athletic and financial goals.

SMWW: Would you recommend the course and the agent advisor program to someone who wants to get into the business?

Jim: Absolutely. For anyone out there who’s on the fence about what SMWW is offering, take it from me: this is fun, first of all, like a hobby, and it only gets better the longer you’re in it. When I first completed the course my goal was to represent an NFL player (and still is) but I never in my wildest dreams thought I would represent a surfer from South Africa. I may never meet her face to face, but it doesn't matter; we have built a trusting relationship, which is exactly what Dr. Lashbrook told me would happen on that first day he called me just one year ago. SMWW has given me the tools to be an agent. Next I know I just have to take the information and give my best efforts.

SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?

Greg: Jim: The agent business can be a 24/7 operation. Nikita lives in South Africa, so there’s a six- hour time difference between us. There have been times when I’ve rolled out of bed at four in the morning to speak with her or her mother. No complaints, though. I am having a blast with this. I haven’t struck it rich just yet, but it’s something I definitely love.

If you are interested in becoming an agent advisor with Sports Management Worldwide, you should enroll in the Athlete Management Course. To get started today go to our website or call 877-SMWW-NOW or 1-503-445-7105

Hockey Student to Scout For St. Louis Blues, QMJHL Club

SMWW’s Hockey GM & Scouting Course continues to produce tremendous success stories. This month we bring you the story of Carson Greer. Carson has always spent time around the ice, but this year he’ll be telling the St. Louis Blues and a QMJHL team what he’s seeing.

SMWW: Carson, could you tell us about your new position?

Carson: I am working with two clubs this season: the Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL) and the St. Louis Blues (NHL).

For the Drummondville Voltigeurs, I will be scouting major midget players from the PEI/NB league, as well as junior players from the Maritime League. Some advance scouting from Quebec league games may be done also. Identifying players that would be willing to go to a Quebec-based team will also be part of my responsibilities. For the St Louis Blues, they have asked me to send in scouting reports from players they feel they might be interested in, also any I identify as a possible match for the team.

SMWW: What is it like to get to scout for the St. Louis Blues?

Carson: It feels awesome. I’ve already gained a lot of respect around the rink at home. People are looking at me as though I have a little more stature than before. Coaches and parents are asking me to check out their sons, and offer any advice that I may have. Both Drummondville and St. Louis have rich histories, and I really appreciate the opportunity to show that I have what it takes to make a positive impact on their organizations.

SMWW: What was your experience like in the Hockey GM & Scouting course?

Carson: Sometimes in life you think you know more than you really do, and I found that out taking this course. Like most Canadians, I have hockey in my blood, and I had formed many firm opinions on a number of topics.

This course introduced me to some new things and helped me connect the dots, so to speak, on a number of issues. I gained a different outlook on the game and learned to train my eye much sharper than I ever did before. The weekly chats were invaluable. I felt like a sponge for the last eight weeks, soaking up every bit of information I could.

SMWW: How did it help you gain employment with the team? ?

Carson: Denis Fugere of Drummondville was well aware of this course, so it was already a selling point with him. I was able to talk about Dr. Lashbrook’s “ethical compass” as a way to differentiate myself from others in the industry. The St. Louis Blues also have some history with this course, so again, it really helped push that door open for me. They saw that I was willing to do what it took to learn more and achieve my goal of working at a high level in hockey.

SMWW: How did it prepare you for your current position?

Carson: I’m a season’s ticket holder for the PEI Rocket of the QMJHL, and since I started taking the course, I have worked hard at looking at the game from a scout’s point of view, instead of a fan’s. With each reading assignment, I would try to take what I learned into practice. My feedback was almost always positive from my fellow students, so that gave me the confidence that I am on the right track and have the ability to do this very well. My next step is to grow my experience with teams, and both Drummondville and the Blues have given me that opportunity.

SMWW: Anything else you would like to say?

Carson: I would just like to thank Dr. Lashbrook, Dino Caputo, Michael Oke and Annie Shultz. I have the chance to chase my dream and couldn’t have done it without you. I am forever grateful.
