Former SBM Student Now Working in Baseball
Landen

Every month Sports Management Worldwide tells you about our graduates who have taken advantage of our high level training and worked their way into an exciting career in the world of sports. This month we will tell the story of Landen Garner.

Landen enrolled in the Sports Business Management (SBM) course in May of 2006. As a former automotive paint supply salesman, Landen always had a passion for sports, but he finally decided to pursue his passion and came to SMWW for help.

During the SBM course, Landen took advantage of the expertise of Tom Leip and Bret Polvorosa, the instructors of the Sports Business Management course. He worked hard to develop a relationship with Tom who he learned had contacts in his home state of Utah. Landen’s passion is the sport of baseball so he was hoping to utilize the course to get his foot in the door with a baseball team.

After the class was over, Landen stayed in touch with Tom Leip. Leip was able to set up an interview for Landen with the General Manager of the Orem Owlz, the Rookie League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Through the knowledge attained in the Sports Business Management class, Landen was able to impress the staff in the interview and was offered a job as Director of Ticketing the very next day!

When asked about the Sports Business Management class, Landen’s response was:

“I want you to know that the Sports Business Management class has changed my life completely. I owe a lot of this success to Tom Leip, Bret Polvorosa and Sports Management Worldwide. The help and support that they provided for me made all the difference in helping me get a job in the front office with a baseball team.”

Broadcasting Students Get "On-Air"
Integrity Sports Network

Sports Management Worldwide's Broadcasting course formed a great partnership with Steve Nash and his company, Integrity Sports Network. As the partnership has matured, Integrity Sports Network has begun to see an opportunity to grow its business model.

SMWW and Integrity Sports Network is proud to announce that it has entered into agreements with three graduate students of Sports Management Worldwide courses. The students will work as Independent Sports Correspondents covering Major League Baseball and the Arena Football League.

Preston Bailey of Tampa Bay, FL, a graduate of the Sports Broadcasting course, has signed on with ISN to cover the AFL Tampa Bay Storm and MLB Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Jeff Eskow of El Cajone, CA, another graduate of the Sports Broadcasting course, has signed on with ISN to cover the AFL San Jose Sabercats and MLB San Diego Padres.

Glenn Griffith of Los Angeles, CA, a graduate of the Sports Business Management course, has signed to cover the AFL Las Angeles Avengers and MLB Los Angeles Dodgers.

Under these agreements, each correspondent will be providing incisive comment and analysis on the latest developments for the respective teams that they have been assigned and presenting their commentary on two of the Integrity Sport Network's radio programs; "Arena Football Unleashed" with hosts Lucas Yarnell and Steve Nash and "Talking Baseball" with host James 'JP' Puester.

These programs are currently broadcast in the Greater Kansas City, MO Metropolitan Area, on KCXL 1140AM and KCTO 1160AM, and streamed live via the Internet at www.integrity-sports.net.

The ISN Independent Correspondent Program enables graduate students to obtain immediate hands on experience in the coverage of major sporting events, interviews with players and coaches, and/or the production of their own on-air correspondent reports. The program is geared toward furthering the skills of each correspondent while building a track record for them to parlay into their sports broadcasting and/or management careers.

2007 SMWW Annual Conference Wrap Up
CC

The 2007 SMWW Career Conference brought 300 people from all over the world to hear from the largest collection of speakers that SMWW has ever assembled. Set in the Hyatt Hotel’s large ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, the conference provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about different careers in the sports world. Speakers from the front office of sports teams and media in all five major sports in the US created a well rounded group for the attendees to hear from. Speakers shared their personal stories of how they got into the business and offered lots of advice for those wanting to enter the field.

The conference also provides a great opportunity to network. While SMWW brought dozens of successful sports executives to meet with our attendees, having the event with the NFL Combine as a backdrop brings attendees in contact with hundreds of NFL employees.

SMWW’s Annual Conference also includes an opening night party (which was held at Hooters this year) and a large tailgater style party on Saturday evening. The Colts cheerleaders where a special guest at this year’s Saturday night tailgater. They were a big hit and took the time to sign autographs and take pictures with our attendees.

Student to Scout for WHL Team
ICE

The success of SMWW's Hockey GM & Scouting course is something that no one could have predicted. It seems like every week SMWW gets contacted by one of our graduates who is now working in the game of hockey.

This month we caught up with Russ Rankin. Russ is now spending a lot of time by the ice watching prospects for a Western Hockey League (WHL) team.

SMWW: Russ, could you tell us about your new scouting position?

Russ: I am the California/US scout for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League (WHL). I travel around California going to bantam tournaments and games looking for players for the Ice to draft at the WHL's Bantam Draft. I am in contact with team managers and registrars as well as the families of some of the players I see.

I keep in contact with our GM and our head scout and submit scouting reports after each tournament or game I attend.

SMWW: What was your experience like in the Hockey GM & Scouting course?

Russ: It was awesome. It was a lot of work - especially the first 4 weeks of the course where we learned about the labor history between the players and the NHL. It had been years since I was in any kind of "school" environment so it was fun getting used to studying and having assignments again.

I liked how interactive the course was with us having to post written assignments on the message board and also having to read other student's posts and comment on them. It was cool seeing what other people had gotten out of the reading and what their thoughts were. I also really liked the weekly chats and I feel like those really helped me to understand more about what scouting is all about. ISS scout Dino Caputo was really interesting and it was great to be able to ask him all kinds of questions.

SMWW: How did it help you gain your position with the club?

Russ: Most of what I got out of the course was a lot of background information on the business side of hockey and comprehensive instruction on what to look for as a scout. The more I learned as the course went on, the more confident I became that I could be an effective scout in professional hockey.

I asked a lot of questions about what I needed to do to get started in scouting and that really helped. When the opportunity became available to work with the Ice, I felt really confident that I could do the job and I think that showed.

SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want to get into the business of hockey?

Russ: I definitely would. I considered myself to be really knowledgeable about hockey and I learned a lot that I didn't know. I think the course would give anyone who was interested in either scouting or management positions in pro hockey a really solid base in addition to some resources which could help get their foot in the door.

SMWW: Anything else you would like to say?

Russ: Just that I really enjoyed the course and all the people I met during the eight weeks that I was involved. I'd also like to thank SMWW for being flexible enough to allow me to finish the course late due to my crazy schedule.
