The Soccer Management and Scouting Course is an 8 week online course that offers cutting edge theories on how to develop a business career in professional soccer. Those individuals interested in working their way up in the world of soccer need insider knowledge on soccer club operations, soccer scouting and player management. Ian Atkins
Ian Atkins is the current European Director of Scouting for Sunderland FC in the English Premier League and will be hosting the International component of SMWW’s Soccer Scouting & Management course.
Ian has had a distinguished career as a player, coach, manager and scout. During a 20-year playing career he had eight clubs, including two spells with Sunderland and Birmingham City and playing more than 200 games with his first club Shrewsbury Town, whom he joined as an apprentice.
During the 1985/86 season Ian was part of the successful Everton side that won the 1st Division Championship (now Premier League), the European Cup Winners Cup and
FA Cup Finalist v Manchester United.
In 1990 Ian became Player Manager of Colchester United and in total managed eight Football League sides including Bristol Rovers, Torquay United, Cambridge United, Oxford United, Carlisle United and Doncaster Rovers. In the 1996/97 he guided Northampton Town to promotion via the play-offs.
Steve Simmons
Steve Simmons is a professional football scout currently working for
Aston Villa in the Premier League. His primary roles is to assess forthcoming opponents and evaluate players across the UK and Europe. Steve has previously worked for Birmingham City, Southend United, Bristol Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers and is a graduate from the SMWW Soccer Management & Scouting course.
Tim ReganTim Regan is currently a Scout with US Soccer Federation and former Chief Scout of Toronto FC and a former US U-18 Men's National Team Assistant Coach. Tim is a former standout with Bradley University and was drafted in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft by the New York MetroStars. After spending 3 seasons with the MetroStars, Tim was released and signed with Chivas USA. After a successful season with Chivas, Tim was sent back to New York with the now re-named New York Red Bulls. Tim spent his final season in MLS with the Red Bulls. He played one MLS match with Toronto FC in 2008 after signing a ten-day contract. Overall, Tim played a total of 81 games over five seasons and left the league as one of the most well-liked players to pass through MLS.
Matt Martin
Matt is a Regional Scout with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer, covering collegiate, USL, and MLS matches on the East Coast of the United States for
recruitment and advanced scouting purposes. Matt is excited to have joined Kansas City following two and a half years with The New York Red Bulls. He began professionally scouting with The Scouting Network (TSN) of Birmingham, England after completion of SMWW's Soccer Scouting and Management Course in 2007. Matthew, a graduate of the University of Washington, has a background in coaching athletics and has assisted at the collegiate, youth and intramural levels while attending college and while serving on active duty in the US Air Force. Matt has been a part of the SMWW staff since 2009.
Scott Rezendes - Salary Capologist
Scott Rezendes was the first employee of the Major League Soccer Players Union in 2006. His role gave him responsibility to manage player contracts and prepared agents and players for negotiations with the Major League Soccer office. He also has prior experience working with a sports arbitrator and is a consultant for European football teams regarding salary cap, player quotas and football finance issues.
The course facilitators will mentor and educate students with their vast experiences playing the game, managing the game, coaching the game and scouting at all levels of the game. You will finish the course with a new and diversified skill set in evaluating soccer talent, managing soccer organizations, and operating player personnel. You will also finish the course with an opportunity to build lasting relationships with the course facilitators and guest speakers in professional soccer worldwide. Not only will you have the "who you know", but you will have the "what you know!"

Weekly Audio Chats - A unique aspect of each 8 week online course is the opportunity for students to participate weekly in interactive live audio chats with fellow students, Ian Atkins, Tim Regan, Steve Simmons, Matt Martin, and guest speakers. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn from your course facilitators. In addition the chat allows you to network within the international soccer industry and build lasting relationships with your course facilitators and fellow students. If you are unable to attend the chat they are recorded and archived and you can listen at a more convenient time.
Online Education - This innovative academic course is facilitated through a web-based educational delivery system. You will enjoy the live audio chats in addition to the online discussion boards, weekly readings, weekly quizzes, course project, and interaction amongst fellow sports business minded students and faculty. The course content is the foundation to a successful career on the business side of professional soccer!
Global Participation - SMWW students participate from over 125 countries. Courses have a international influence and instructors will cater assignments to specific countries or leagues. Countries with economic challenges are eligible for economic dicounts.
Earn University Credit: Most participants are not college students. Most participants are working full time in a variety of careers including many in sports from all over the world.
