Harry Sinden and Dr. Lynn Lashbrook:
Harry Sinden
The name Harry Sinden is synonymous with hockey. Harry Sinden needs no introduction. He is as legendary a figure of the Boston Bruins, as is Bobby Orr or Ray Bourque. He was a long time coach and general manager of the Original Six team. He has played the game at every level, coached at every level, and managed at every level. Harry Sinden knows every facet of the business side of hockey because he has lived it. If you want to learn about working on the inside of the NHL, Harry Sinden is the answer.

Harry Sinden was the long-time general manager, coach, and president for the Boston Bruins. He was the coach of the Team Canada during the 1972 Summit Series. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builders category. In 1972, Harry Sinden became the Boston Bruins GM and would spend just over 28 years as general manager of the Bruins. Harry added the title of club president in 1989, and remained as the chief executive of the club until the summer of 2006, and has retired to his current consulting role with the Bruins. As GM, Sinden presided over the team's long years of consistent success, setting the North American major professional record for most consecutive seasons in the playoffs with 30, which including making the finals five times (1974, 1977, 1978, 1988, 1990) and two regular season first place finishes (1983, 1990).
Currently, Sinden is a "senior adviser" to the Bruins, as well as a member of the selection committee for the Hockey Hall of Fame. As a coach and General Manager, he has been part of a Bruins Stanley Cup championship, six Conference titles and ten Division championships and his Boston teams combined for 29 winning seasons. With a 7-4 Boston win at St. Louis on October 17, 1995, he became the first general manager in the history of the NHL to record 1,000 victories and his all-time record as a GM stands at 1170-763-301 for a .591 winning percentage.
The Hockey GM and Scouting Course includes a one hour live audio chat with Harry Sinden and other classmates once a week for the eight week course. You will love his sense of humor and historical perspective of the game. (Harry Sinden's chat is in addition to the chat with Dr. Lashbrook.)

The Future of Scouting- Learn the latest technology
Several NHL, CHL, and NCAA teams and others are using new software and hardware devices to enhance their scouting process. Scouts can chart shots, assess players on quickness and effort, and record comments without missing a key play. Immediately after the game, the scout's report, including player assessments, are sent via Internet, rather than the traditional method of writing everything down on paper.
This allows hockey organizations to gather information on players 24 hours a day. By eliminating the mounds of paperwork associated with the scouting process, scouting has become more efficient, and data is collected and shared much more easily. SMWW course students will get the opportunity to be exposed to the cutting-edge techniques being used by teams worldwide.
SMWW has forged a partnership with RinkNet Scouting software company to provide its Hockey GM & Scouting students training with the top level of scouting software on the market. RinkNet's scouting software and database system is currently being used by the majority of National Hockey League teams and many Canadian Hockey League teams. It also services teams in Finland, Sweden and Germany. Students in SMWW's course will be required to learn the ins and outs of the software as a part of the course training. "It's exciting to think that our graduates will be coming out of the course with the ability to use a system that is being used in the NHL every day," says Dr. Lashbrook, President of SMWW. "We think this partnership and training is going to make our graduates more valuable to clubs and allow them to walk right in with solid training that can help the club immediately."
In addition to teaching students how to evaluate talent and actually write a scouting report, students will now learn the next step: recording the information and managing the data. Many people in the world of hockey scouting are able to judge talent, but there is nowhere else in the world that someone wanting to learn to scout can actually be taught the scouting management system being used by the NHL.

I have had a busy and successful career in music for most of my adult life but I was always a huge hockey fan and began educating myself on the nuances of the game long before I knew I was doing it. When I stumbled across SMWW something clicked and I saw an opportunity to channel my passion for and knowledge of the game into a possible career.
The SMWW course was amazing; I learned so much about the history of the game and about the events in hockey history which served to shape and define the landscape of the modern game and the labor issues which have confronted it recently. The weekly chats were also great and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with my fellow students and firing questions at the scouts who moderated the sessions. Their insights were invaluable in helping me to decide that I could be a successful scout. The SMWW course gave me the confidence to pursue a career in hockey and now I am the California/Western U.S. Regional Scout for the Kootenay Ice Hockey Club of the Western Hockey League.
