| Cory Manago Has Success His First
Year |
 |
|
After finishing the Athlete Management course in November
of 2006, SMWW agent advisor Cory Manago got off to a
quick start in the agent business. He quickly got to work on
creating relationships with talented football players and
signed LB Steve Dildine from Washington State, who is
currently with the 49ers and WR Michael Depriest who was
signed by the Indianapolis Colts. Dildine recently
received significant playing time in the 49ers first preseason
game but he has moved to fullback, a position he played in
high school. Dildine was also interviewed on the 49ers website
and you can read that interview by clicking the link at the
bottom of this story.
SMWW's Director of Football, Marcus Williams,
recently caught up with Cory to talk with him about signing
Steve Dildine and working with SMWW as an agent advisor.
Marcus Williams: When and where were you introduced to
Dildine? Cory Manago: Steve's sophomore season
at WSU I had a friend who coached him contact me and felt I
should keep an eye this kid.
MW: You completed the program in august of 06, how soon
after that was Steve first contacted by you?
CM: It was in January after he completed his
eligibility when we first spoke.
MW: What was it about you that Dildine liked as an
agent? CM: He liked my approach and how I
didn't throw pamphlets and brochures at him during his playing
career. He respected the fact that I respected the ethics of
his school, family and most of all, his wife.
MW: When did Steve know he wanted to sign with you and
SMWW? CM: Once we had a chance to come to the
SMWW headquarters and sit down with Dr. Lashbrook and the SMWW
management team, my credibility was confirmed. It was then
that Steve knew he had the agency that he and his wife
trusted.
MW: Now that you have a year under your belt, do you
feel you have met or exceeded your expectations?
CM: I still have the same expectations now that
I had then. Simply put, I want to be a better agent tomorrow
than I am today.
MW: Looking at your future as an agent, do feel you are
in a position to accomplish the goals you have set for
yourself? CM: Yes, wholeheartedly. You have to
give credit where credit is due and SMWW has been the
resounding resource for me to lean on for any and every lesson
this business has taught me.
MW: A year ago you were Cory Manago the man, wanting to
represent athletes. Who is Cory Manago the agent today?
CM: I am an agent that makes my clients want to
improve. I am an agent that makes sure my clients' questions
are answered. I truly believe that relationships are the key.
The number of clients or dollar amount earned is not an issue
when your clients know you are there for them personally
beyond the playing field.

|
SMWW's instructor for the Football GM & Scouting
Course, Marc Trestman, has been busy in the last month.
He is currently at Saints training camp working as a
consultant to the team and advising the coaching staff and
players on offensive schemes. From what we saw in their
first pre-season game, the Saints offensive is wide open and
could be on its way to a record breaking season.
Trestman has also begun writing an online column for Sports
Illustrated. Trestman will draw from his 17 years in the NFL
and provide readers with insights from the mind of a veteran
coach.

Former Agent Advisor Signs NBA 1st Round
Pick |
|
|
|
Former SMWW Agent Advisor Steve Banks has finally
hit the big time. After working with SMWW as an agent advisor
for a couple years, Banks joined Goodwin Sports Management in
Seattle Washington. After recruiting some top talent through
the last two drafts, Banks landed Rodney Stuckey from
Eastern Washington who was selected 15th overall by the
Detriot Pistions in the 2007 NBA Draft.
"I have been very fortunate" said Banks. "I got my start
with SMWW and worked closely with Bill Kent and Dr. Lashbrook
for a couple years. I just stuck with it and believed that I
could make it as an agent. It always takes a bit longer than
you want it to but as long as you try to do things the right
way and continue to meet people and learn the business, it can
really happen."
Banks and SMWW's Director of Basketball, Bill Kent,
continue to do some agent work together and have remained
close.
"There was never a doubt to me that Steve was on his way
to signing first round picks," said Bill Kent. "Steve is a
bright guy who is a tremendous networker. A lot of talent is
coming out of Seattle right now and it was just a matter of
time before he got close with a player who was headed to the
League."
Stuckey had a very good showing in the NBA Summer League
and is believed by some in the NBA to have the potential to
become an NBA starter for many years. For now, he will sit
behind a veteran and respected point guard in NBA all-star
Chauncey Billups.
Stuckey signed with Banks under Goodwin Sports Management
(GSM) which had a very successful year of recruiting. On top
of landing Stuckey, GSM also sign the #2 overall pick, Kevin
Durant (from Texas, drafted by Seattle) and also landed the #3
overall pick, Al Horford (from Florida, drafted by Atlanta).
