| SMWW Student Takes Position with Seattle
Sonics |
 |
|
SMWW: Patrick, could you tell us about your new position
with the Seattle Sonics?
Patrick: I am an Inside Sales Associate for the
Sonics-Storm. The job is mainly focused on selling ticket
packages for Sonics and Storms games to individuals. The
inside sales staff is a team of about 15 recent college
graduates who are looking to get their start in sports through
ticket sales. The job lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year
and if you are successful there are many advancement
opportunities within the organization as well as elsewhere. My
goal is to reach a high level in the sports world so I look at
this as a tremendous place to start for my first job in
sports. Currently we are in the middle of the playoff push
for the Seattle Storm and calling guests from previous games
to get them out to the few games we have left in this season
as well as the playoffs.
SMWW: How did SMWW and the SBM course help you secure
this new position? How long did it take you to get this
position once you joined the program?
Patrick: I was made aware of the job opening by Tom
Leip and Bret Polvorosa who had previously worked with the
Inside Sales Manager for the Sonics. I also benefited from a
previous relationship that Chris Rounds, SMWW's Director, had
with my boss. The week before I started here Bret Polvorosa,
the instructor of the Sports Business Management Course, was
in doing a training session for the Sonics' staff. The skills
that Bret and Tom Leip teach in the course are truly the same
skills that are used on a day to day basis at the Sonics. I
have found my start much easier as a result of my taking the
course. I'm very excited to have my foot in the door and I'm
working on to advance my career and move up the Sonics
corporate ladder.
SMWW: How aware were the Sonics of SMWW and its
instructors?
Patrick: Very aware, as I said the inside sales
manager has worked with both Tom and Bret in the past as well
as a few other employees of SMWW. I am not the only SMWW
graduate that has been hired by the Sonics this month.
SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want
to get a career in sports? Why?
Patrick: I would most certainly recommend the Sports
Business Management course to anyone interested in starting
their career in sports. The training that you get will put you
ahead of the game once you start your job and the connections
that SMWW has with the sports world will put you in a position
to land that first job.
The next course begins August 6th and there is
still time to register!

Student Gets Job with Cleveland Browns & Two
Websites |
|
|
|
It has been an exciting couple months for former SMWW
student Bill Jordan. He is now working for the Cleveland
Browns and continues to write articles and work with Maury
Brown on bizofbaseball.com and bizoffootball.com. After taking
SMWW's Baseball
GM & Scouting course, opportunities have continued to
develop for Bill and we are excited to provide you his story
below.
Bill, Tell us about your new position with the Cleveland
Browns?
Jordan: I am working with the merchandising
department. The job will involve distribution from their
warehouse, working in their team shop or at a stand in the
stadium. It is a great opportunity to meet more people in the
organization. I also get to see a lot of football!
Bill, tell us about your involvement with
bizofbaseball.com and biz of bizofootball.com.
Jordan: It started out just being involved with
bizobaseball.com because bizoffootball was still in
development. Maury Brown, SMWW's Baseball GM & Scouting
instructor, had me transcribe an interview that he did with
Mark Shapiro and I worked hard to get it back to him right
away.
After working with Maury for a while, I had a good idea of
what he was looking for and around that time, he launched the
football website as well. This was when he let me write my
first BizofBaseball.com exclusive on the restoration project
for League Park in Cleveland and the possible restoration of
Tiger Stadium. Then he really started having me focus on the
football website because it was his new project. The more I do
it, the better my articles are getting and the more successful
I am becoming in being able to cover a story.
What was your experience like in the Baseball GM &
Scouting Course?
Jordan: The course was amazing. It has already
changed my life in ways that I didn't think were possible from
an online course. To be honest, when I first saw the course I
thought that it would be an easy thing that I could do during
the summer to put on my resume. I had never taken an online
class before, but I had heard that they were pretty much a
joke. This course was anything but.
I learned something everyday, whether it was in class or
from one of the assignments. I look at the game of baseball
completely different because of those eight weeks. If what
the course costs is compared to how much students can get out
of the course, it is a steal. If a student takes advantage of
all of the opportunities given to them, they will learn more
than they could ever imagine.
Tell us about the best project you have gotten to do
with bizofbaseball.com or bizoffootball.com?
Jordan: Getting to interview Billy Beane was
incredible and really opened things up for me. It also helped
me learn a lot about the process of interviewing someone of
his stature. I was very nervous going into the interview, but
he was really easy to talk to and very personable. His answers
basically made me decide not to go to graduate school and go
straight into the job market. It ended up being a life
altering interview for me in many ways.
The Exclusive was a great project because Maury made me
work for it. I had to write about five copies of it before it
was ready for the website. It showed me how much work I would
have to put in if I wanted to be successful in this business.
It was an invaluable experience for me
Anything else that you would like to say?
Jordan: Taking a course with SMWW is worth at least
ten times more than they are charging, if you go after what is
in front of you. It's not hard; it just takes time and
dedication. If you do the assignments and show up to class,
you will know more than you ever thought possible. If anyone
would like to contact me, feel free to email me at:
