| SBM Student Now Working With LA
Galaxy |
 |
|
The Sports
Business Management (SBM) course is among the most popular
of all of SMWW's courses. The reason for this is because the
main focus of the course is to help those who are interested
in getting their foot in the door with a team and begin
working in the front office. This month we bring you the
success story of Jordan Anderson.
Jordan enrolled in the (SBM)
course in April of 2007.
SMWW: Jordan, could you tell us about your position with
the LA Galaxy?
Jordan: I was invited to the Los Angeles Kings
Career Fair on March 10 through AEG (which I heard about
through SMWW). There I was able to meet with representatives
from teams such as the Kings, the Avengers, the Clippers, the
Galaxy, and a few other minor league baseball teams. I was
making my rounds and noticed that the line for the Galaxy had
just opened up. I decided to jump in and "shake and bake" (as
Dr. Lashbrook would say) with Chris Zepeda, account executive
for the Los Angeles Galaxy. I immediately started talking
about SMWW and my relationship with Bret Polvorosa. His name
was familiar and right then the conversation felt a bit
friendlier.
I was invited to come down for an interview for an
internship position. As soon as I knew when the interview was,
I jumped on the computer and gathered information about the
team. I also got in touch with Mark Washo, who I had met at
the SMWW Sports Career Conference in Indianapolis. He gave me
great advice on how to improve my resume and cover letter.
I had the interview and a few days later, I was asked
to join the team. Some of my duties include: game day
operations, customer service, ticket sales, and player
appearances. I feel very fortunate to have landed this
position. The MLS is a very exciting sport, and with the
addition of David Beckham, the future looks very
promising.
SMWW: How did SMWW and the SBM course help you secure
this new position? How long did it take you to get this
position once you joined the program?
Jordan: SMWW has been a huge booster for my career.
I was able to explain the SBM course in my interview and
describe to them what the course entails. I was very lucky
because at the time, the course had just begun to introduce
benefit statements, and instructions on how to leave
voicemails. I was able to bring more information to the table
than the rest of the candidates. Thankfully, the skills and
strategies from the course gave me a good foundation of what
teams are looking for in candidates and that allowed me to
make a big impression on them during the interview.
The pieces just fell into place. I signed up for the course
and two weeks later, here I am with the LA Galaxy, the most
high profile soccer team in the US.
SMWW: How aware were the Galaxy of SMWW and its
instructors?
Jordan: Again, I cannot tell you enough that
networking, "shaking and baking", and of course knowing Bret
Polvorosa can help boost your chances of becoming involved in
the sports world. Almost all of the team personnel knew the
name of Bret Polvorosa and the courses that SMWW offers. Tim
Martin, who is the Director of Sales, knows Bret very well.
SMWW: Would you recommend the course to others who want
to get a career in sports? Why?
Jordan: Well, I have been telling many people about
SMWW and how great it has been to my sports career. So, yes, I
would definitely recommend any courses through SMWW. You
really cannot put a price on the relationships that I have
established with the SMWW staff and friends who have taken the
courses. From the first phone call with Andrew in the office,
to keeping a friendship with Mark Washo, I have come away with
a lot of valuable information. Both Dr. and Mrs. Lashbrook are
great people, and I recommend everyone try and meet them if
you get the chance.
SMWW: Anything else that you would like to say?
Jordan: I would just like to depart with saying that
I really feel fortunate to have stumbled across SMWW and the
people involved. Good luck to everyone and I will definitely
keep in touch.

| 2007 NFL Draft Day - From a New Agent Advisor's
Perspective |
 |
|
Q&A with Agent Advisor Joe Aloisi
Q. Knowing you had a prospect, how did you prepare
for draft day?
A. After several conversations with Dr. Lashbrook
leading up to the draft, we realized that Matt Moore (QB,
OSU) had the real possibility of being drafted on Day 2
with the almost certainty of becoming a Free Agent. As
interest grew within the NFL coaching ranks, we provided
primary and secondary contact information for draft day and
coached Matt on how to handle calls from team representatives.
Q. How did you feel when Matt was not drafted?
A. From the day Matt signed with SMWW, we prepared
him and his parents that scouting reports had him rated as a
late round draft pick or Free Agent selection. We didn't have
time to be disappointed because by the middle of the 7th
round, teams began to contact both Matt, Lynn & myself.
The phone did not stop ringing.
Q. What teams contacted Matt?
A. Oakland Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina
Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions and the Dallas
Cowboys to name a few.
Q. How did you and Lynn assist Matt in narrowing his
choices?
A. Immediately following the final draft selection,
we reviewed the pros and cons of each team that had called. We
took into consideration current QB situation, type of offense,
coaching staff and location. Lynn then contacted each team
individually via conference call. They each had the
opportunity to present their plan as to how Matt would fit
into their offensive scheme. Lynn,Matt and I were free to ask
any questions.
Q. What were the factors that went into Matt
selecting the Dallas Cowboys?
A. Lynn and I called each team back to receive their
offer (signing bonus and contract terms) and presented the
results to Matt and his father. Matt narrowed the field to
three teams. Lynn and I contacted these teams for their final
offer. After considering all of his options, Matt chose the
Dallas Cowboys. The entire selection process took a frantic 40
minutes!
Q. Looking back on this day, what are your final
thoughts?
A. Beginning with the SMWW Conference in
Indianapolis, attending the Pro Day at OSU, scheduling private
workouts and negotiating trading card deals, Dr. Lashbrook and
the entire SMWW staff provided guidance and support at each
step along the way. I made a lot of new friends and "boy, did
we have fun!"

| SMWW Opens An Office In The UK |
 |
|
Dear students, graduates and sports business fans,
I am proud to announce the opening of SMWW-United Kingdom!
We have just returned from London where we confirmed John
Print as our SMWW UK Manager. John and I originally met when
he participated in our Athlete Management Course as a student.
He is now a FIFA agent and actively running his own agency,
Sports International Management. John will continue to oversee
the SMWW Soccer Agency, and in addition he will be actively
growing our relationships in the UK as SMWW UK Manager.
On our trip to England we were fortunate to meet with
several clubs, teams, agencies and sports business associates
to discuss their employment needs. With the growth of new and
renovated stadiums, clubs being purchased by a few of our
American friends, and the increase in the need for technology,
we will be adding more sports training courses to fill the
gap. Look for announcements of added UK instructors in Sports
Broadcasting, Formula One, Rugby and Cricket. While in London
we researched what the UK clubs are using for player analysis,
video editing, and statistics. Many of the club management
teams expressed a need for more education in terms of "high
tech" as it pertains to sport, and as usual, all clubs want to
be a financial winner "off the pitch" as they say. Empty
stadiums and sponsorship goals are a golden opportunity for
the well trained SMWW graduate. As part of the SMWW curriculum
we like to have the latest cutting edge technology training
offered in each of our courses so that you have the cutting
edge in sports business! Tours included Twickenham, Watford
FC, Surrey Cricket Club and the Brit Oval and even talkSPORT
radio! (Watching Alan Brazil live is much better than
listening to streaming audio over the internet!) As part of
our new UK office endeavors, John Print will continue to meet
with clubs and venues creating opportunities for our graduates
and meeting their needs.
Bottom line, we want to create more opportunities for you
to succeed in sports business! SMWW hosted a Meet and
Greet and it was fun to reconnect with students and sports
business minded people. Derek Bragg with THE SCOUTING NETWORK
and Soccer Management Facilitator joined us with several
former and current students. I finally got to meet face to
face with students I felt I already knew from our audio chats:
Jermaine Blackwood, now FIFA Agent with his own Sports
Agency, Integrity Soccer Management
Eric Anang, now scouting for The Scouting Network
Sam Soyebo, scout for Crystal Palace
Rashmika Patel, who will be doing some consulting work
for us in Cricket
Kwasi Safo-Adjei, who is soon to be an agent with SMWW
And new students Tereze Bogdanova, Pawel Weska, Judd
Mussleman, Steve Simmons.
A big thank you to Kevin Roberts and Sports Business Campus
for hosting yet another great conference with speakers from
all over the world. I met up with the likes of Tracy Taylor
from Sport Knowledge Australia; Andy Rice, Chad Lion-Chacet
from Sports World, Tony Cadman with the sponsor's consultancy,
Mariana Todorova (an SMWW student) and it was a pleasure to
chat with Graham La Suex who believes in giving back to his
sport. The exciting thing for me is to see that so many of
these sports business executives are so down to earth and
willing to help people who truly have a passion for sports and
want to make a difference. They are enthusiastic about helping
others and growing sports with an ethical compass, integrity
and as a leader in society.
Here is our new SMWW-UK contact information: SMWW - UK
64 Charlotte London, UK W1T 4QD +44(0) 871 288 4799
Thanks to each and every one of you, as in small ways, each
of you is a part of the growth of SMWW.

Nine SMWW Athletes Sign With NFL Teams |
|
|
|
Sports Management Worldwide had its most successful NFL draft in its history last month.
Nine of its NFL prospects, all of which are co-represented by SMWW Agent Advisors and
Dr. Lynn Lashbrook, President of SMWW, have signed contracts with NFL teams.
Sunday night of the NFL draft was chaotic for the SMWW staff. Calls from NFL teams flooded
the headquarters as teams made offers and worked to get our players signed.
"In all my years as an agent, I have never seen such activity late on Sunday like that,"
said Dr. Lashbrook. "Having a QB who was getting the type of press coverage that Matt Moore
got on draft day was so much fun. We were on the phone with head coaches, offensive
coordinators and scouts. You could just feel how much our company has grown in the last
four years. It's very exciting."
SMWW's agent advisors were right in the middle of the action as they fielded phone calls
from NFL team personnel. Agent advisors are all graduates of SMWW's
Athlete
Management course so this was their first opportunity to really dive into the action and
use the skills they learned in the course. Some of them even had to help their free agent
clients make decisions on which team to go play for.
Quarterback Matt Moore, who was represented by Agent Advisor Joe Aloisi, ended up signing
with the Dallas Cowboys.
"It was crazy how many times some of these teams called us," said Aloisi. "Mike Martz [offensive
coordinator, Detroit Lions] and I were on the phone and Mike was explaining why Matt should play
for Detroit. At the same time, our other phones were ringing off the hook and calls were coming
in from Kansas City, (Bill Kuharich, VP and long time friend of Lynn Lashbrook),Dallas, (Stephen
Jones, VP and son of Jerry Jones),Cincinnati, (Ken Zampese, QB Coach), Carolina and others. They
all wanted to talk to Matt and me and try to convince us that they had the best situation for Matt."
"Dr. Lashbrook worked very hard to allow me to be involved in everything that was happening. I was
able to be on phone calls as he talked to personnel from NFL teams and I felt so included in everything.
It was an incredible experience and I learned so much. The best part is that I think we have Matt
going into a great situation and I get to be involved and watch him develop his career in the NFL."
(note: a complete interview with Joe Aloisi is below)
Agent advisor Al Thomas had two of his players sign with NFL teams.
"I was on the phone with a number of NFL teams," said SMWW agent advisor Al Thomas. "It was absolutely
exhilarating. I really enjoyed being a part of Dr. Lashbrook negotiating with teams and finalizing
contracts for my guys. I've now got players with the Eagles and the Redskins. The Athlete Management
course really helped prepare me for working as an agent. I have to thank Dr. Lashbrook, Marcus Williams
and the SMWW family for the guidance and helping me make my dreams become a reality!"
Here is a complete list of players, their SMWW agent advisors and their new NFL teams:
- QB Matt Moore, agent advisor Joe Aloisi, Dallas Cowboys
- OL Tucker Peterson, agent advisor Al Thomas, Washington Redskins
- LB Akeem Jordan, agent advisor Al Thomas, Philadelphia Eagles
- WR Michael DePriest, agent advisor Cory Manago, Indianapolis Colts
- LB Steve Dildine, agent advisor Cory Manago, San Francisco 49ers
- SS Chris Smith, agent advisor Lyle Masnikoff, Philadelphia Eagles
- WR Mark Burr, agent advisor Lyle Masnikoff, Cincinnati Bengals
