Before SMWW was born, sports careers were
something that were out of reach for most people.
As
SMWW approaches its fourth year in business, the
number of success stories of graduates who have
utilized our
training to fulfill their dream of working in sports
continues to grow.
This month focuses on Ashley Holstrom who is now
working for the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. Ashley is
an Oregon native who met Dr. Lasbhrook at Western
Oregon University. She had always loved sports but
wasn't sure how to get a career working in the front
office of a team. Dr. Lashbrook told her about the Sports Business Management
Program and right away she knew that she was
interested in anything that would help her get into
sports.
"When I first met Dr. Lashbrook, I loved his
passion
and drive for sports and I felt like it would be a great
fit for me to get involved with one of his programs,"
said Holstrom. "I chose the Sports Business Course
because I was hoping to get a job with a sports
team.
I loved every minute of the program!"
As the course was coming to a close, Holstrom was
communicating with the instructors of the course,
Bret Polvorosa and Tom Leip, about the teams that
SMWW has good relationships with. Holstrom had
always wanted to live in Phoenix, Arizona so she was
able to travel there and interview with both the
Phoenix Suns and the Coyotes. Holstrom actually
received an offer from both clubs and decided on the
Coyotes and has been thrilled ever since.
"I absolutely love my job and love working in
sports
business, said Holstrom. "I wouldn’t be living my
dream if it weren’t for Dr. Lashbrook, Bret, Tom, and
every one else at SMWW. I can’t thank them
enough for all the great training and contacts I have
received."
Now that Holstrom is on the job, she has found that
the training provided in the SBM course has really
helped her succeed.
"I felt ahead of the game when I first started
my new position due to my extensive training in
the SBM course," said Holstrom. "Taking the course
was the best decision I could have made."

| Russ Lande Signs On With The Sporting News |
 |
|
Football season kicks off this week and we are proud
to
announce that our Football GM and
Scouting Program
with instructor Russ Lande as accepted a
new position with The Sporting News as
their NFL Draft
Expert.
Lande will be responsible for writing NFL insider
content, providing detailed scouting reports on
college players throughout the college football
season and posting an ongoing mock draft in
the “War Room” leading up to the NFL Draft.
"I am very excited to be working with the
Sporting News this season," said Lande. "It will give
me access to even more information on players and
also provide me an opportunity to share my scouting
reports with a larger audience"
Before working for Sporting News, Lande served as a
college scout for the Cleveland Browns for three
years covering the mid-west region while evaluating
all eligible prospects for the NFL Draft. He covers all-
star games, the NFL Combine and pro days. He
eventually formed his own company, GMJr.com, and
now writes the most comprehensive draft guides in
the country on college football players.
Lande has been teaching SMWW's Football GM &
Scouting Course since it began over a year ago.
Students love the course and say that it really
opens
their eyes to the
necessary information needed to break into the world
of professional football. Russ, along with our
NFL
Consultant, former player Matt Brock, is
giving our
students an insider's perspective on what you need
to know and do to get injected into collegiate or pro
football.
One of the types of scouts the NFL hires are
the "25/25 guys". Some teams are taking people
right
out of college approximately 25 years old or so,
paying them 25-30K in salary and sending them on
the road to scout players and as our instructor Russ
Lande stated, "They have them dig up all the dirt
they
can on certain players."

| SMWW Experiences Massive Growth Internationally: |
 |
|
A Note From Our President, Dr. Lynn
Lashbrook:
SMWW is being recognized globally for its incredible
resources to sports business. Due to this
international awareness, cross pollination of team
rosters and ownership groups, and the growth of
sports business in world markets, SMWW has
received numerous inquiries to train future sports
business leaders. Simply put, sport is a universal
language and SMWW is a catalyst for creating
connectivity around the world. SMWW is experiencing
record growth internationally.
A few examples of international sports business
expansion:
• The NFL has added an international slot to their
practice squad roster for the first time in history

owned by NFL owner groups • More
international
players in the NBA than ever before • Basketball
leagues have opened & the number of Americans that
can compete internationally rosters continues to rise
• As we see more and more globalization of
societies, the popularity of sports such as rugby, will
continue to grow cross culturally • Sports
media, broadcasting, sponsorship, and sports
marketing companies work in the global marketplace
and international cross training is required
A few examples of how SMWW is affecting that

| Chad Ford - Playing For Peace |
 |
|
Basketball GM &
Scouting Course Guest Facilitator Chad
Ford is on the forefront of a program designed
to
promote peace in the Middle East. Ford became
involved with an organization called "Playing For
Peace" whose mission is to use the game of
basketball
to unite and educate children and their communities
throughout the world.
In addition to his work within basketball with ESPN,
Ford works as an instructor of International Cultural
Studies at Brigham Young University-Hawaii (Ford
received a master's degree from George Mason
University's Institute for Conflict Analysis and
Resolution). He began to get involved with Playing
For Peace because he was intrigued by the possibility
of young kids from Israel and Palestine coming
together to play sports and how a game such as
basketball could begin to build a bridge between the
conflict and promote peace.
Can workshops that employ basketball training be an
effective medium through which national or ethnic
identities are re-imagined? Is there some sort of new,
inclusive common identity that can come out of it?
And more important, can it be a lasting part of the
process toward building an authentic cross-
community?
"Playing For Peace has ongoing studies to
measure
its effect," says Chad Ford. "In the short term, the
studies
indicate that the program is very effective at
lessening stereotypes between the groups. It will be
a few years before we know whether it has lasting
long-term effects but it is exciting to think about the
impact a program like this could have."

| ISS Works With Grandson Of Hockey Legend Howe |
 |
|
An article recently released on NHL.com
about Travis Howe, grandson of NHL
legend Gordie Howe, discussed Travis'
involvement with International Scouting
Services (ISS).
Travis has the type of work ethic and drive that will
land him in the NHL someday. Throughout his life, he
has been willing to get involved in hockey in as many
ways as possible. One of those ways involves
working as a scout for ISS. Students in the Hockey GM &
Scouting Course with Sports Management
Worldwide will also be given the opportunity to
learn from ISS. Some students in course will even be
given the opportunity to continue working with ISS
once they complete the program.
The article also accurately points out part of ISS's
business model and that has helped them find a niche
in the world of hockey scouting:
Unlike the NHL's Central Scouting bureau, which
primarily focuses on players who are within one or
two years of NHL Entry Draft eligibility, ISS looks
at younger players who could make the leap to
programs that produce the majority of NHL
players.

| So you want to work in sports? |
 |
|
A letter from New Era Athletic Director/Sports
Administration course facilitator Dr. Jim Krause.
Early in my life, I knew I had a passion to be a
coach. After graduating from a small college, I gave
myself ten years to make it to Division I and I made
it in seven. Building two winning programs at lower
levels gave my resume credibility. The next thirty-
five is a personal history of professional development
in athletics.
Over the years I have realized the greatest
profession in this world is one that includes your
passion. For many of us that means earning a living
working somewhere in the world of sports. Sport and
athletic programs are expanding at a great rate and
there are not enough QUALIFIED people to fill all the
positions to run a credible program. Until now, there
was a very long and involved learning curve to
making it in the professional world of sports. Earlier it
was appropriate for people to start at the bottom of
an organization and work up through the ranks until
they achieved the pinnacle of their ability or the
organization.
Now you can combine your personal talents with
expert assistance to start a career in the sports
world. Each of you has personal strengths and
weaknesses within which you have to work each and
every day. It is critical that you understand your
personality type and work within your strengths and
avoid interference from your weaknesses. By doing
this, you make success available and you basically
eliminate total failure. With this knowledge in hand,
you can find a place in the sports world where your
strengths can be parlayed into a role in a sports or
athletic organization.
Using a athletic department as an example,
there are positions requiring leadership, detail work,
facilities maintenance, visionary planning, equipment
management, personnel, marketing, public relations,
coaching, assistant coaching, compliance, sports
information, document development, training and first
aid, event planning, event management, fundraising,
purchasing, budget development, recruiting,
retention, tutoring, academic advising and many
more. Every athletic organization from youth sports
through the professional ranks has this wide array of
opportunities for the passionate sports enthusiast.
Sports Management Worldwide is providing
skill set development which will allow you to begin
the process of pursuing that dream of working in
sports. If you don’t know where to begin, come into
the NEW ERA ATHLETIC
AND SPORTS
ADMINISTRATION COURSE for a broader view of
what sports employment is all about. Research
winning, budgets, human resources, program
development, marketing, fundraising, staff
development and more, as students of all
backgrounds express and argue positions in many
controversial categories.
Upon completion of the course, you will have a broad
understanding of sports administration, will have
presented
opinions and fought their credibility, and will have
been forced to make uncomfortable decisions
regarding any number of topics. This experience,
along with an honest self evaluation will point you in
your direction for success in the sports world.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Krause
SMWW’s latest New Era Athletic Director Course
success is Doug Atkins, a high
school women’s basketball coach in Indiana, who
used SMWW assistance to make a professional
presentation to a search committee. He was hired
as a high school athletic director without previous
administrative experience. We believe there are
opportunities like this out there for you!
Our next Athletic Director Course begins on
October 9th.

Hockey Student Takes GM Position! |
|
|
|
SMWW formed a partnership with International
Scouting Services (ISS) to provide better education
to our Hockey GM & Scouting Course students. ISS
has developed a network of scouts working around
the world to provide in-depth player analysis on the
top hockey prospects. Our hope at SMWW was
that
many of our graduates of the program would also be
given the opportunity to work with ISS as scouts and
continue to learn and grow in their hockey careers.
Matt Ebbs was able to land a dream job when he
was hired as the General Manager of ISS!
Obviously it is a very exciting
announcement for
all parties involved. SMWW caught up with Matt to
find out about
his new position and his experience in the course.
Tell us what you hope to bring to ISS?
"I hope to bring my business and legal expertise
in the hope of growing the business. There is an
incredible opportunity at ISS. I’m excited to help and
work with a very talented group of scouts."
What is your professional & hockey background?
"I completed my undergraduate degree at the
University of Toronto where I played hockey and
football. I then went on to law school at the
University of Ottawa and started to practice law in
1993. I practiced law for seven (7) years. I left
my practice and held a variety of executive positions
until 2002 when I returned to Queen’s University and
obtained my M.B.A. in 2004. I then enrolled in
SMWW's Hockey GM & Scouting Course in 2006."
Your thoughts on getting a position working in
hockey? "The business of hockey has
always been a passion of mine. I was born and raised
in a “hockey family.” My father was a good player
and invited to the Montreal Canadians camp the
same year the Rocket was invited. He studied law
instead but we went to many games together and
watched the likes of Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden at
the Forum along with my two brothers. I’m trying to
develop a career that incorporates law, business and
sport."
"My good friend was recently named GM of the
Boston Bruins. He’s very bright but also worked at his
career for quite awhile before getting his opportunity
with the Bruins. His education and experience will
serve him well as he builds a Stanley Cup contender
in Boston. I plan on leveraging my education and
acquiring more experience in order to open up doors
in hockey. Maybe some day I’ll get an opportunity to
build a team also. My immediate goal is to focus on
ISS and help them build a great organization."
Your thoughts on the Hockey GM & Scouting
Course? "It was a great program. The
material was first rate. The back and forth
interaction on the
discussion boards was extremely informative. There
are a lot of very bright people taking this program.
This only adds to the credibility of the program. While
at ISS, it will be one of my goals to enhance the
relationship between ISS and SMWW. There are a
number of areas where we can work together. Each
participant in the GM and Scouting course could
potentially
become part of the ISS network. We would like to
build on
this and hopefully provide scouting opportunities for
those talented participants who want to take their
learning to the next level."
What had you hoped to get out of the program?
"In short I hoped to get some valuable
insight and information on the business of hockey
and scouting. SWMM did not disappoint in this
regard. Like any program you get out of it what you
put in. Don’t expect to be spoon fed. That is not the
structure nor should it be."
"I also hoped to dedicate the summer to studying
and
researching the 2005 CBA and also developing my
skills as a scout. I’m a lawyer by trade and at that
time wanted to be in a position to step out and fill
the
role of AGM should one come up. "I
researched
available programs and SMWW presented by far the
best program. I spoke to Dr. Lashbrook and obtained
the comfort level I was looking for. I was also hoping
to network with SMWW and all the participants with
a view to opening up more doors. I have developed a
network within the NHL and wanted to obtain as
much practical knowledge as possible to prepare for
any opening that may come about."
Anything else you want to add? "As
Dr.
Lashbrook always says, you need a ticket to the
game to catch a foul ball. He’s right! I’m thrilled to
have bought my SMWW ticket and caught a foul ball.
With the level of talent taking the program, I’m
certain that all the participants will also catch their
own foul ball if they take the information from the
course and continue to learn and network in hockey.
For now, it is my goal and intent to help ISS and
further develop a career in the business of hockey."

Scouting Course begins on
the week of September 12th. If you have already
filled out an
application and been accepted for the program, you
