| Football GM and Scouting Program |
 |
|
Football season has kicked off and we are proud to announce
that our Football
GM and Scouting Program with former NFL scout Russ
Lande is really opening the eyes of our current students
as to the necessecary information needed to break into fall's
most popular sport! Russ, along with our NFL Consultant,
former player Matt Brock, is giving our students an insider's
perspective on what you need to know and do to get injected
into collegiate or pro football.
Football is taking over as America's favorite sport, and
opportunities do exist for the individuals that have the
credentials and drive to make it happen. Our course is
designed to help you evaluate talent on the collegiate and pro
levels, teach you the responsibilities of a General Manager,
and give you more than just a foundation in football scouting.
We will teach you the formulas that big time programs use to
evaluate talent; they don't use traditional formulas.
You don't have to be a coach, former player, or otherwise
to get into football as a career. You just need drive,
mentorship and education as to how things really work behind
the scenes. That's what we offer here at SMWW! Your goals are
our goals, because when we help you acheive them, everybody
wins! Call us today! 1-877-SMWW-NOW

Business Management Update
Bret Polvorosa, one of our Sports Business Management
facilitators and President of sports marketing consulting
firm, Grip Training & Development, reports on his travels
and projects during the month of August. If you’re looking to
break into sports, you have to get connected with our team of
sports business professionals. In the following paragraphs,
Polvorosa details his trips to Philadelphia, Nashville and
Atlanta during his consulting projects.
Philadelphia Flyers: With the trade for Peter
Forsberg the phones were literally off the hook in the Flyers
offices during the first few weeks in August. We’re not
exaggerating when we say some of the ticket sales
representaves were making way more money than there bosses
during days in August. It’s far and few between when big
trades, as this one was, create huge demand for ticket
packages, hospitality, suites rentals and sponsorships. The
Flyers’ business executives are all now sales and marketing
geniuses thanks to that one trade. Oh, and according to Las
Vegas odds makers, the Flyers are 5:1 favorites to win the
Stanley Cup. At this rate, they’ll sell out of all their home
games before Opening Night.
Philadelphia 76’ers: still plenty of excitement
marketing and selling the 76’ers during August but not as much
as their NHL friends at the north end of the Wachovia Center.
The 76’ers sales and marketing staff are doing their jobs the
old fashioned way, picking up the phone and reaching out to
potential new business partners one at a time.
Polvorosa traveled to work with the Nashville Predators
and the following week with the Atlanta Braves in
late August. During his trip to Atlanta he also met with
executives from the Atlanta Hawks, Thrashers and Phillips
Arena.
Nashville Predators: the NHL is alive and thriving
in Smashville as they call it. In a similar situation to the
Flyers, just before our arrival the Predators signed future
NHL Hall of Famer, Paul Kariya. Paul had an off year for him,
year two years ago playing through injuries for the Avalanche.
According to Predators’ GM Dave Poille, who we and the entire
Preds sales and marketing staff had lunch with during our
visit, Paul is in great shape and poised to get his offensive
numbers back to where they belong which is HOF status. They’re
setting new season ticket sales records currently in Nashville
and that’s not happening at the Titans’ offices.
Atlanta Braves: the Braves are working hard on
trying to change how they generate new customers and retain
current customers. People say Atlanta isn’t a baseball town
because the Braves don’t sell out playoff games until they
reach the NLCS. Give me a break. They’re about to win their
division for the 14th CONSECUTIVE YEAR. Playoff games at
Turner Field are not a big deal or rare occurrence, they
happen every year. My feelings are that Braves fans are
spoiled and unless the team wins the World Series, everything
else is a non- event. So to combat this challenge, the Braves
are making great strides in coming up with alternative and
outside the box sales and marketing efforts. Instead of
selling like they’ve won the NL East for 40 straight years,
they’re selling like they’re in last place and the results are
showing. This past off-season season ticket sales were up for
the first time in six years, and they won’t stop there. Way to
go Bravos!

| NPI No Pun Intended - Dr. Lashbrook's NEW
Column |
 |
|
Sports Management Worldwide is proud to publish the second
edition of a new column by Dr. Lashbrook, NPI, No Pun
Intended! The staff here at SMWW has suggested the column
be entitled PTI, Pun Totally Intended. As you
will read below, Dr. Lashbrook has an affinity for sports, the
ethical compass, and last but not least...puns!
PLAYOFFS A PAYOFF FOR NEW ORLEANS? As we watch the
aftermath of the devastation of New Orleans I can’t help but
think how sports can play a significant role in contributing
more than just financial contributions. Maybe dedicating New
Orleans as the permanent host (10 years?) for the Super Bowl,
Final Four, and the Future College Football Championship
games, yes a Final Four Football Championship game in New
Orleans would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to the
economy. Why not?
NO PUN INTENDED (NPI)
Speaking of the New Orleans tragedy unfolding on TV and a
huge outcry for help from the victims for water, food, and
shoes I was waiting for Nike, the Saint, Phil Knight,
to airlift 11,000 pair of shoes to the shoeless victims.
Nike Air? (npi) or what about Adidas and their
Impossible is Nothing!
Am I the only one who noticed that the family
of the late Roger Maris sued and won a defamation lawsuit
against Anheiser Busch for $120 million? I never saw it in
any sports section. Could it be that the Anheuser-Busch's
dominance of advertising in sports sponsorship has intimidated
the sports media, if so it is definitely Busch League
(npi) or am I just too sensitive to those who broke
Roger's homerun record with a cloud of steroid accusations. I
hope every one of those records has to carry the asterisk
Roger had to carry for all those years when he broke Babe
Ruth’s record. Only this time we call the asterisk an
assteroid (NPI)
I find it interesting how Hines Ward got a pay raise from
the Steelers without holding out and yet Terrell Owens is left
with same contract. In Pittsburg, Heinz (npi) Ward is
consider a local hero and in Philadelphia Terrell Owens is a
hotdog (npi) Speaking of the melee before the Monday
Night game between Philadelphia and Atlanta, wasn’t it nice to
see Drew Rosenhaus not involved? It looks like he’s
been playing ketchup from spending all his time with
T.O. (npi)
Derek Watson update: On a serious note, in all my years of
being an NFL agent, I never had a Director of Player Personnel
call me before a player had cleared waivers. Mark Dominic of
Tampa Bay called me Sunday morning to assure me that Tampa Bay
Buccaneers wanted to keep Derek on the practice squad. I truly
believe he will be on the active roster and wish him well.
We'll see you next month here in NPI. (No Pun Intended)
