At 21-years old no one is prepared to make one of the biggest decisions of their life, but for most highly rated prospects that is the only choice they have.

As a stream of business-suit wearing, smooth-talking, promise-making agents make their way to your door looking to grab hold of your potential and line their pocket with it, you, the elite athlete with potential oozing from your pores, must decide, who is the person you want in your corner?

An unenviable decision at any age.

For Alex Van Dyke, record setting wide receiver at University of Nevada, the choice was easier than he thought it would be. It was 1996, he had just set the NCAA record with highest receiving yards per game over his career and he knew a bright future was ahead.

Amongst the cloud of agents vying for Alex’s commitment to them, Dr. Lynn Lashbrook stood out from the crowd.

“He was relaxed, he wasn’t trying to put on a front that he was some superstar agent,” remembers Van Dyke. “He was dressed casually, the way he spoke and his demeaner made him seem real.

“My wife and I liked his vibe and we connected immediately, he loved on us and we loved on him.”

Dr. Lashbrook’s pitch was simple and honest - he was planning on doing things a little differently than the big box agencies.

He didn’t believe a volume business, with hundreds of clients competing for attention, could deliver the goods. Instead he envisioned a world where he gave his clients a level of individual care and concern, shepherding them through more than just contracts and promotions, but life itself.

Van Dyke was drafted in the 2nd round to the New York Jets, and played in the league for 5 seasons, but that isn’t where his relationship with Dr. Lashbrook ended.

“We’re still friends to this day, in fact, it was Dr. Lashbrook that counselled me on my post-playing day career,” remembers the now 43-year old Van Dyke. “I told Dr. Lashbrook that I wanted to be a speed trainer and he helped me do research and set up my fitness center Going Vertical in Sacramento.

“Here I am 14 years later, in the business that he helped me find.”

Even after a playing career and a successful post-career, that isn’t where their relationship ends.

Dr. Lashbrook is now representing Alex Van Dyke Jr., a recently graduated wide receiver from UCLA as he embarks on a journey to play professional ball.

“Dr. Lashbrook conducts himself with integrity, and I knew that he was the only person who would be right to represent my son.”

And even to this day, 22-years after their first meeting, Dr. Lashbrook and Alex Van Dyke talk frequently, and end all their phone calls the same way, by telling each other that they love one another.
