CONGRATS TO COLIN COWHERD!

As SMWW lanches a national radio campaign on ESPN with the Colin Cowherd show we are proud that Colin was named SI Sportscaster of the year. In my opinion his show is the best one I have ever heard. Rome is burning!(npi)

REFLECTING ON THE RECRUITMENT OF DARRELL RUSSELL

As I read about the death of Darrell Russell I couldn’t help recall the day Jim Steiner (NFL Agent and President of SFX Football) met with Darrell and his Mom during the recruiting process of selecting an agent.

Right in the middle of our presentation he just got up and left his Mom and us at the table and walked away.  His Mom insisted we continue the presentation as Darrell has become impatient with the whole process. Looking back on the whole incident and watching Darrell struggle off the field in the NFL with many issues I always wonder would his career had been different if we had represented him.  Simply put, can an agent make a difference in a client’s growth as a person? In my opinion the answer is Yes, if one does not have too many clients!

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL IS WHAT DONOVAN MCNABB NEEDS!

What happened to the city of Brotherly Love?  Donovan McNabb does not deserve the criticism from the leader of the NAACP in Philadelphia.  Drew Rosenhaus and Terrell Owens truly are the Philadelphia EGOS (npi)

DO COACHES TIP OFF PLAYERS BEFORE RANDOM DRUG TEST?

Eventhough Gary Barnett has been fired for many reasons, one of the most disturbing allegations is that he tipped off players in advance before they were being tested for drugs. Speaking of random drug testing, I am still wondering how Onterrio Smith was able to remain drug-free at Oregon for two years after being kicked out of Tennessee for testing positive for drugs through random testing. Later he is suspended by the NFL for a year for continual postive tests as well as the famous "The Original Whizzinator" incident. If the media were doing its job around the country they would interview former players not in the NFL about the integrity of random drug testing in college football programs. I remain concerned tipping off players is a bigger problem across the country, but I am not POSITIVE (npi).

Can an Agent Can Make a Difference?

Everyone knows about Terrell Owens and his Agent Drew Rosenhaus and how their actions destroyed the Eagles’ chance of a return to the Super Bowl.  In contrast, Shaun Alexander’s Agent, Jim Steiner, quietly negotiated a one year deal with the Seahawks at the beginning of the season as a compromise to avoid in major disruptions for Shaun and the Seahawks.  From last nights game it sure looks like a Win-Win for the Seahawks and their star running back.  NEXT QUESTION? (npi)

CONGRESS READY TO TAKE ON BCS NOW THAT THEY WON WITH MLB!

The BCS will face its biggest challenge to date when they have to testify before Congress on why we

can’t have a college football playoff system.  Using the excuse of too much “missed class time” is

equivalent to Rafael Palmeiro’s  excuse of using a contaminated needle with steroids!  Warning to BCS:

Be careful of Perjury!

WAS NEBRASKA TOO STRONG IN THE 80”S

When Karl Dorrell, the UCLA head coach, was speaking of great college football dynasties he suggested that the

Nebraska football team was using steroids back in the 80’s.  I will never forget when I was an assistant AD at the

University of Missouri and we announced to the football staff we were going to institute a drug testing program, several

of the coaches immediately asked if that would include testing for steroids?  In those days we didn’t test for steroids

because the costs for testing were too expensive.  I do remember how big the Nebraska linemen were in those days.

Needless to say, we never beat them in the five years I was at Mizzou. I am still concerned 25 years later how the steroid

Issue continues to be an unfortunate by-product in sports. Needless to say we have paid the price of not investing into testing

Sooner. Speaking of Sooner(s) (npi) we did beat them one year when one of our lineman returned to fall camp 40 lbs heavier.

Need I say more?  It really does take an act of congress to clean up the issue.
